Chapter 1548 I Am Looking for My Lover
None of them had anticipated that the city where Raymond was staying would suddenly plunge into panic with the arrival of daylight.
At seven that morning, an infected patient was discovered in the bustling downtown area—meaning the disease had already spread to the city center. The mall where the patient was found had been immediately quarantined, everyone inside held for observation while outside, fear gripped the streets.
Standing on his hotel balcony, Raymond watched pedestrians hurrying below, frantically stockpiling supplies from supermarkets. The city was clearly descending into chaos.
So when Richard's call came through, his brow furrowed, heart instantly tightening. "You couldn't even keep an eye on one person!" he snapped.
Richard, knowing he was at fault, didn't dare argue back.
After hanging up, Raymond tried calling Selena, only to find her phone switched off. He instantly regretted coming here behind her back, knowing full well what she was like.
With the city now in turmoil, the thought of Selena—pregnant and vulnerable—arriving here made his blood run cold. He couldn't bear to imagine what might happen, and kept messaging her, desperate to know when her flight would land.
When Selena arrived at the airport, something felt off about the air around her. The sandstorm was fierce, making it nearly impossible to keep her eyes open. Another Stellarian traveling with her seemed equally bothered by the stinging wind.
Only after boarding a local guide's car did they find some relief.
The guide didn't speak their language well, so communication was limited.
"Sit, rest," he said, closing the car door behind them.
Selena had only brought a small bag, wearing flat shoes and dressed like a college student.
She glanced at the Stellarian woman beside her, who wore thick glasses and a hat pulled low. Pregnancy had made Selena drowsy, and since she'd booked the same guide for pickup, she assumed they were headed to the same hotel.
But when the car stopped and she opened her eyes, they were in the middle of nowhere. The guide was conversing with a group of men who promptly handed him a wad of cash. Grinning, he pocketed the money, got back in his car, and drove away.
Selena's heart trembled as she instinctively looked toward the woman beside her. The woman pushed her hat brim lower, her voice cold. "Looks like we've been sold," she said matter-of-factly.
Selena could never have imagined such brazen trafficking from a local guide.
As the men approached, speaking in a language she couldn't understand, they reached for her. Without hesitation, she kicked out, knocking two of them down with the momentum.
There were four men total, with a motorcycle nearby—likely their transportation. The woman beside her was still frozen in shock when Selena delivered two more swift kicks to the remaining men's groins. They crumpled to the ground, faces ashen, clutching themselves in agony.
Snatching the motorcycle keys from the ground, Selena grabbed the woman's arm. "Let's go!" she commanded.
The woman reacted quickly, jumping onto the back seat. Though not an expert, Selena knew the basics of motorcycle operation, and with her experience balancing on bicycles, managed a steady ride.
Having fallen asleep during the car journey, she had no idea which route they'd taken. "Do you remember the way to the airport?" she asked over her shoulder.
"Yes," the woman replied softly, her voice remarkably calm despite everything.
Selena breathed a sigh of relief. For the next hour, she drove while the woman navigated.
They eventually stopped near the airport, but their ultimate destination wasn't there—it was a hotel. The woman checked her phone's map briefly before directing Selena to change course.
Along the way, they encountered people fleeing in droves. Beyond the evacuees, the most striking sight was the housing on the outskirts—rusted tin structures stretching into the distance. There were no paved roads, only dirt paths that kicked up clouds of dust with every gust of wind.
Selena steered the motorcycle toward the city center. The woman behind her surveyed their surroundings and sighed heavily.
"Is this your first time here?" Selena asked.
"Yes. It really is one of the poorest countries in the world," the woman replied, her mouth twisting slightly.
"What brings you here?" Selena inquired.
"I'm looking for my brother. And you?"
"My lover."
Both had come searching for someone they cared about, now caught in a city spiraling into chaos.
