Chapter 152 This Wasn't Love

Selena used to be so confused by Alice's attitude. On the surface, they seemed to get along just fine, but Alice always managed to say the wrong things in front of James.

And she‘d casually bring up certain topics that would set James off against Selena.

Despite their rocky relationship, Alice always talked to Selena like they were best friends.

Beatrice's dislike for Selena was obvious, but Alice's feelings were way more hidden.

Right now, Selena finally got it. Alice couldn't possibly like her because she had taken the spot of Raymond's wife.

Looking back, it all made sense why Alice, even when sick, would still go out.

Hearing Alice's footsteps fade away, Selena slowly straightened up, catching Raymond's scent.

She looked up just as he looked down, their noses almost touching.

Selena quickly let go of Raymond and pretended to rub her forehead, acting like she leaned on him because she wasn't feeling well.

Raymond squinted, feeling a bit empty inside, but he quickly pulled himself together.

Selena glanced outside; the Fair family's car was already gone, and she let out a sigh of relief.

Just as she was about to get out of the car, her phone rang. It was James.

A hint of surprise flashed in Selena's eyes. She suppressed the tremor in her fingers and answered the call.

James's voice came through, "Selena, the second round of financing went through. The Montague family put in more money. I was thinking of celebrating my discharge. Why don't you invite Raymond over to our place? I'll have Beatrice prepare a dinner to say thanks."

It sounded nice, but it was really just a move to get closer to the Montague family.

This realization made Selena feel sick, but thinking about James's late-stage liver cancer and the fact that he only had a year left, she felt helpless.

Selena asked, "Dad, who said you could be discharged?"

James replied, "It's my choice, Selena. Don't worry about my health."

James's face was full of relief and joy because of the successful financing. "The company's valuation has doubled, and we'll need the Montague family's support even more. Let's have Raymond over the day after tomorrow. We haven't seen him since he got back."

"We'll see." Selena hung up the phone, her brows deeply furrowed.

She had already gotten out of the car and turned to thank Raymond, but he was just focused on the documents in his lap, looking calm.

In a short time, Selena owed Raymond so much and didn't know how to repay him.

"Mr. Montague, thanks for tonight," Selena said.

Raymond's thin lips pressed together, and he responded with a faint "Hmm," then told John to drive.

John glanced at him through the rearview mirror and stepped on the gas.

As the car drove away, Raymond looked at Selena through the rearview mirror.

Selena was still standing there, looking clear-headed, and turned to walk towards the hospital alone.

Raymond moved the documents off his knees and glanced down at a certain excited part of his body.

Just now, in her panic, Selena had touched a place she shouldn't have, and her hands had wrapped around his waist, her warm breath seeping through his shirt onto his chest.

Raymond pressed his lips together, his fingers tightening around the documents, the tendons in his wrist taut, showcasing his long and powerful hands.

Raymond raised his hand, rubbing his temples, a trace of irritation appearing on his brow.

He couldn't figure out if Selena's actions were intentional or accidental, like a cat's paw, always scratching at just the right spot to make him itch.

Raymond hated the feeling of his emotions being tied to someone else, and he almost rationally extinguished that flicker of emotion.

He thought that it was probably because of that one night that he was moved. This wasn't love.
