Chapter 1624 It's All My Fault
Selena took a step back, feeling the ground shake twice more.
Nina steadied her, looking worried. "It's just an aftershock. No clue how long these will keep coming. Looks like the whole mountain's wrecked. See those bricks? They must be from the research base, smashed to bits."
In the face of nature's power, human technology was insignificant.
Selena and Nina stood there for an hour, waiting for the aftershocks to stop. When they finally did, they followed the rocky path deeper into the area.
Among the stones were pieces of modern machinery, clearly from the research base.
Sweat dripped from Selena's forehead as she remembered that Lawrence was also there.
She quickened her pace but tripped over a protruding rock, nearly falling.
Nina caught her, and they both saw the countless bodies piled up in the crevice below, some so crushed they were unrecognizable.
Selena couldn't hold back anymore and vomited, clutching the side for support.
The bodies were too mangled to identify, their faces twisted beyond recognition.
Her stomach churned, and she vomited for a minute, her eyes red, before rinsing her mouth with bottled water.
Even though Nina had survived numerous assassination attempts and killed many, the sight made her uneasy.
The crevice was deep, seemingly stretching down for miles, filled with bodies.
She didn't want to look any longer and held onto Selena's arm. "Let's keep moving. This crack is long. The base was underground, probably pushed up by some force. This might be good; it means not everyone inside was buried. But who knows how many survived."
Selena didn't know how to respond, so she continued walking, dazed.
The number of bodies increased, all from the research base. Some were still alive, pinned under massive rocks, staring at the blue sky, seemingly numb to the pain, muttering to themselves.
"The sky, the blue sky, haven't seen it in so long."
"No, it's been years since I saw the blue sky."
"Ha, I can't believe I'm seeing the sky. Trees, green trees, the sound of water. I must be dreaming. I must be dreaming."
The researchers had been trapped underground for at least ten years.
No plants could grow there, and they were strictly managed, never allowed to leave the base. They hadn't seen the real sky in years, their eyes now filled with a longing so deep they couldn't feel pain.
This was the first living person Selena encountered. She and Nina hurried over.
"Where is the research base? What happened?"
But no matter how she asked, the person just stared at the sky, entranced.
A leaf slowly drifted down, and he reached out to catch it, tears in his eyes.
He seemed soulless, breathing on instinct.
Selena frowned, realizing she wouldn't get any answers, and continued forward.
The area was vast, seemingly endless. Though many trees were destroyed, others were leaning, blocking the view.
She grew tired and found a rock to sit on.
Nina sat beside her, both looking grim.
They had seen so few survivors, barely enough to count on one hand, and those were barely alive, just moments from death.
Night was falling, and staying here was dangerous.
Nina pointed to a relatively flat spot nearby. "Let's spend the night there. We'll continue searching tomorrow."
Selena nodded and took out some cookies to eat.
Nina quickly built a small shelter from grass to block the wind. Once done, she sat down and ate the remaining cookies.
Selena's gaze fell on the gemstone bracelet on Nina's wrist, well-protected and worn for years.
"If you find your brother, what will you do?"
Nina smiled, instinctively touching the gemstone. "I'll take him to our mom's grave. She must miss him."
After saying this, she looked up at the dark sky.
"It's all my fault." She always said this whenever the topic came up.
