Chapter 237 We Just Have a Normal Employer-Employee Relationship
Selena felt super embarrassed after leaving the villa.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm down fast. She had to sort out Jacob's mess ASAP so she could get back to Silver Bay City without any more drama.
She'd already done her homework on that government official. The guy's name was Kieran, and he seemed pretty clean. He was good at his job and didn't have any major dirt on him.
It was obvious someone was out to block Jacob because he ticked Kieran off.
I mean, who wouldn't be mad if their kid needed over twenty stitches?
Selena dug around and finally found a photo of Kieran and Caterlington on the county's public account. It was from last year, showing them cutting a ribbon for some project.
After checking out the public account, she called Caterlington.
He picked up quick.
"Selena, what's up? Miss me?"
Selena ignored that and asked, "When you came to Ridgefield last year, did you meet a government official named Kieran?"
Caterlington had been in the family business for a while and met tons of people, so he didn't always remember names.
Selena sent him the ribbon-cutting photo.
"That's the person in this photo. Take a look."
Caterlington had a vague memory and chuckled. "Looks like you need a favor. What's going on?"
Selena explained Jacob's situation, and Caterlington rubbed his temples.
"Didn't I hear the Montague Group has business with Ridgefield recently? That's a big deal. Raymond should be talking to these leaders. Wouldn't it be faster to ask him?"
Selena knew he was teasing her, but she needed his help.
"Mr. Montague is super busy and doesn't have time for my small stuff. Plus, we only have a professional relationship."
Caterlington laughed again. "Alright, I'll call him. But even if he agrees not to call the cops out of respect for me, your uncle will still have to pay up. Over twenty stitches is no joke, you get that, right?"
"I get it. As long as my cousin doesn't go to jail."
After hanging up, Selena heard a cough behind her and froze.
When she turned around, she saw Raymond, Rosalind, John, and a few leaders who had been with Raymond standing there.
She had no clue how long they'd been there.
Selena felt her luck was really bad this year. Every time she talked smack about Raymond, he was always there.
And Kieran seemed to recognize Selena. Just as he was about to speak, his phone rang.
He saw the caller ID and it was a big shot from Silver Bay City, so he answered.
"Caterlington, long time no see."
After some small talk, Kieran heard Caterlington mention Jacob's situation.
Since his son wasn't seriously hurt and the Layman family was willing to pay compensation, he agreed to let Jacob off the hook and not send him to jail.
They had future deals, and having Caterlington owe him a favor might be useful.
After agreeing, they exchanged more pleasantries before hanging up.
Kieran looked at Selena and smiled.
"I remember now, you're Brian's niece, right? Caterlington told me about it, so I won't hold a grudge."
Selena felt super awkward. Caterlington's actions were too quick, and it happened at such a bad time.
She felt Raymond's gaze was full of mockery, like he was laughing at her for trying everything, even calling a suitor for help.
Didn't Raymond also catch her having dinner with Caterlington last time?
But now that Kieran had spoken, Selena couldn't ignore it.
"Thanks. I'll have my cousin apologize."
"To get Caterlington's help, you must have some skills."
Kieran said a polite lie and then turned to Raymond.
"We'll walk you to your car. This project is settled, and we look forward to the Montague Group coming over to develop it."
Raymond nodded and didn't look at Selena again.
Selena stood there, waiting until Raymond's car left before she held her head in frustration.
She had no idea how much Raymond had heard just now.
