Chapter 108 He Wanted Both the Woman and the Money
Taken aback by Maggie's serious expression, Isabella still managed to respond, "It's a private bilingual kindergarten, and the house is rented in a prime location. Even with a monthly rent of ten thousand, it's still considered cheap."
"Oh," Maggie nodded, "It's really not easy to raise a child these days."
"In the capital, the cost of living is high, and parents place a great emphasis on education. Spending ten thousand on kindergarten tuition is nothing. Many parents spend millions or even tens of millions to secure a place in a good school or buy a tiny house... Isabella suddenly realized that she had been led off track by Maggie and stared at her without saying a word.
Maggie seemed to be enjoying the conversation, as if urging her to continue.
"Maggie, you're deliberately making a laughingstock of me," Isabella said, wiping away her tears with a tissue.
"You seemed to be in a good mood just now," Maggie responded.
When they talked about school districts earlier, Isabella's attention had been diverted, and she wasn't as sad and angry as before.
Feeling frustrated, Isabella wiped her tears again and fell silent.
This time, Maggie took pity on her and asked, "If James doesn't divorce you, what are you planning to do?"
"I'll sue him," Isabella said. "He just got promoted and doesn't want any scandals to jeopardize his position as the director. If he wants to keep his job, he will have to compromise with me and leave with nothing. He has to return all the money he spent on that mistress over the years."
Isabella spoke through gritted teeth.
Maggie brought her back to reality with a practical statement, "A position as the hospital director is just a job, and owning three properties in the capital is a huge advantage. If you were in his shoes, how would you choose?"
Isabella suddenly woke up from her dream.
As the only child in her family, her family owned three valuable houses worth millions. There was no way James would give up on that kind of advantage.
"That's the reason he won't divorce me," Isabella felt a shiver down her spine. "He wants it all – the woman, the money, and he's even eyeing my family’s properties."
Maggie said, "I'm just reminding you. As for how you handle this eight-year-long marriage, that's your business. And don't be a full-time housewife. Even if you're not worried about money, don't let your world revolve only around one man."
Isabella asked, "So you're saying I should go out and find men too?"
Maggie stayed silent.
'What kind of thinking is this?'
Before Maggie could speak, Isabella gritted her teeth and said, "You're right. James betrayed me. Why should I have to tolerate it? Even though I'm getting older, I have money. I can find any handsome young man I want. If he can play with young girls, I can find young boys. Thirty-year-old women are the most desirable."
"Calm down," Maggie quickly said. "That's not what I meant. I meant that you should have your own circle, not that you should find more men. Right now, the priority is to work on your marriage."
"Oh," Isabella finally understood and said, "I know how to handle it now. If he wants to mess with my family's house, he can forget about it."
"As long as you're sure," Maggie breathed a sigh of relief, worried that Isabella might make impulsive decisions and find a handsome young man. She glanced at Isabella's belly and casually asked, "Have you gone to the hospital for a check-up? It's been eight years and you still haven't gotten pregnant. Even the mistress has had her second child by now."
This question was merely out of curiosity and not meant to touch Isabella's sore spot.
Isabella said, "I've gone to the hospital for a check-up, and I'm fine."
Suddenly, Isabella thought of something. If she was fine, then it was possible that James had a problem.
When her mother-in-law had asked her to get checked, she had also asked James to get checked. But James felt embarrassed and refused to go.
Isabella said, "Since I'm fine, it might be James' problem."
Maggie said, "Grace has already had her second child."
"Who can guarantee that the mistress's child is definitely James'?" Isabella suddenly became excited. "I'm going to find the mistress's eldest daughter and do a paternity test."
Maggie stayed silent.
Could it really be this melodramatic?
