Chapter 376 Trap
Maggie got Arya and Dulce's worries, but she couldn't ignore news about her kid.
"I'll check it out first to see if it's my daughter," Maggie said, pursing her lips. "Then we'll figure out what to do. If I am to bring her back, I'll talk to the Flores first. I won't act rashly."
She had to think about Fiorello's feelings now.
Maggie felt she owed Fiorello a lot. He always stood by her when Kimberly made things tough. She couldn't hurt him after all that.
Arya and Dulce felt relieved hearing Maggie's plan.
They were just worried she'd bring the child back suddenly and upset the Flores.
"I'll drive you," Dulce offered.
An hour later, they arrived at . The dean, Gavin Rowe, was a kind man in his fifties, well-liked by the kids.
When Maggie explained why she was there, Gavin handed her a file.
"Ms. Miller, take a look. This child was adopted by us four years ago and matches your description," he said, "A man who collected recyclables brought her here. He found her and tried to raise her but eventually brought her to us."
Maggie flipped through the file.
The photo showed a four-and-a-half-year-old girl, looking very different from the newborn photo Arya had shown her. It was hard to tell from the appearance alone.
But the girl had beautiful eyes, just like Maggie's.
Dulce looked at the photo too. "The eyes do look similar."
Maggie felt more confident. "Where is this child now?" she asked urgently. "Can I see her?"
Gavin handed her another file. "This is the address of the adoptive parents."
"Thank you," Maggie said, eager to see the child.
With the file in hand, she and Dulce headed to the adoptive parents' place.
As they left, Gregory stepped out from behind Gavin's office.
"Mr. Gregory Flores, everything's done as you asked," Gavin said respectfully.
"Good job." Gregory placed a bank card on the desk. "Here's twenty thousand dollars. If she comes back, follow my instructions."
Gavin nodded. "But the child isn't Ms. Miller's. Won't a DNA test expose this?"
"Don't worry about that. Just do as I say, and you'll be fine."
Gregory left, and Maggie, unaware of the trap, was on her way to the adoptive parents' apartment.
As they approached, Maggie's emotions swirled with a potent cocktail of anxiety, exhilaration, and trepidation.
Looking at the photo, she said, "Dulce, I owe this child so much. I don't even know what to say when I see her. Should I buy something? I don't know how she's doing with her adoptive parents."
"Little girls like Barbie dolls, but since it's your first visit and you don't know the situation, maybe don't buy anything yet."
"You're right. I don't want to make the adoptive parents suspicious," Maggie worried. "I'm just afraid they won't let her go."
Eventually, they arrived at Maplewood Heights Apartments, where Dulce skillfully navigated to Unit 1102 in Building 78. Maggie verified the address before pressing the doorbell, her heart pounding.
Soon, someone opened the door. Before Maggie could see inside, a little girl ran out angrily, almost bumping into her.
The girl shouted at a man inside, "Hit me if you like! I'm not your real child. My real parents will come for me soon."
