Chapter 243 Giving Laura's Money to Tony
Maggie didn't explain much; she just smiled and touched Adalia's forehead, letting her sit at the next table to play. Then she ordered some juice for herself. They sat down, and Maggie asked, "How have you been all these years?"
"I'm in this line of work; what else can I expect?" Laura was open-minded. She said, "After earning a few more years' worth of money, I'll go back to my hometown. My mom is old and in poor health; I need to save more money to treat her."
"I remember. You have a younger brother, right?" Maggie didn't actually remember this detail very clearly, but she vaguely recalled it.
"Yes, I have a younger brother. He graduated from college last year, found a girlfriend, and they're about to get married." Laura mentioned her brother with a hint of bitterness and helplessness in her expression.
Maggie got back to the point and asked, "Laura, when we entered the club together, you must know what I was doing then, right? I was doing that, too."
Maggie found it hard to bring up and also hard to accept.
Laura understood and smiled, shaking her head. "No, you only agreed to work as a waitress outside the private rooms. The supervisor thought you were pretty and tried to get you to accompany clients for extra money, but you never agreed."
Maggie breathed a sigh of relief. She had been worried for days, afraid that she had accompanied clients back then, making it even harder for her to face Fiorello.
"If you hadn't helped me back then, you wouldn't have entered the private rooms. After that time, I never saw you again, and I didn't know how you'd been all these years," Laura said.
Five years ago, Laura was also a naive young girl who had just entered society. She always remembered Maggie's kindness.
If Laura's family hadn't been so poor, she wouldn't have entered this line of work.
Maggie glanced at Adalia, who was playing with her Barbie doll at the next table, and smiled. "I'm very happy now."
"I can tell," Laura joked. "You just came in looking great. Only a happily married woman would have that kind of glow. You're lucky to have found a good husband."
Laura still didn't dare to dream of marriage. Given her background, how could she find a good man? She wasn't worthy of one.
"He's wonderful." Maggie never hesitated to praise Fiorello. "I had just recovered from a serious illness; my mom injured her leg, and the child needed to go to school. All the pressure was on Fiorello. He's been through a lot, but he never complained once."
"Yes, Maggie, where can you find such a good man You’re lucky." The two were chatting when Laura's phone rang. "Maggie, I'll take this call." "Okay." Maggie got up and went to the next table to accompany Adalia. Maggie didn't pay attention to the content of Laura's call, nor did she know what the person on the other end had said, but Laura's emotions abruptly broke down. Laura asked the other person, "When did this happen? I didn't know my mom had bought a house. She said she hit someone and needs to pay."
"Did she hit someone? I don't know. The house was bought last week. Your mom has been looking at houses for a long time, claiming to have saved a lot of money over the years. Last time, she was short twenty thousand dollars and asked me to borrow it, but I didn't lend it. Today, I heard that your mom bought a house and paid in full for your brother's wedding house. Tony is getting married next month, don't you know?"
These words hit Laura hard. She didn't know her family bought a house; even her brother was getting married with a set date.
A few days ago, her mother said she hit someone and sent a photo, crying that she had no money. The other party demanded $20,000 in compensation, and she scraped together and sent $20,000 back home.
Little did she know that money was used to buy a house.
Over the years, she sent almost one million dollars back home.
She paid for Tony's tuition, the family's expenses, and renovations, and now the family had bought a house in the city in full.
How much does a house in the city cost? It's about ten thousand dollars. Where did the family get the money?
Setting aside renovations for the old house, Tony's education and living expenses, the monthly living expenses she sent home, and the money she gave to her mother over the years, the remaining money for the full house payment was just enough.
Seeing Laura's bad mood, Maggie worried. "Laura, what's wrong?"
Laura hung up the phone blankly, tears streaming down her face.
