Chapter 46 Fiorello Senses Something Amiss

Maggie felt caught like a thief, startled by Fiorello abruptly opening his eyes.

"I, I wasn’t trying to spy," Maggie retracted her hand and hid it behind her back like a child who had done something wrong.

Fiorello lay motionless on the couch, fixing her with his deep-set eyes. "We're legally married. It's totally normal for you to watch me sleep. If you like it, you could watch me every day."

Every day...

Did that mean they'd have to sleep together?

Was Fiorello hinting that they shouldn't sleep in separate rooms anymore?

Maggie gave a dry laugh, carefully avoiding the topic: "Why are you sleeping here?"

"Too tired. I just fell asleep before I knew it," Fiorello sat up and said casually.

Hearing that Fiorello was so exhausted he fell asleep in the living room made Maggie feel a pang of sympathy, even though she hadn't quite admitted it to herself.

"Sorry, did I wake you?" Maggie asked, "Did you eat the watermelon I left for you? Was it good? Sweet?"

Fiorello thought back to the watermelon that had upset his stomach all night and felt his rear ache at the memory.

"...Yeah, it was good. Very sweet."

No sooner had Fiorello finished speaking than his stomach started to trouble him again. "I need to use the restroom."

This time, Fiorello spent twenty minutes in the bathroom. By the time he came out, Maggie had already prepared breakfast.

"I made some pasta. Come eat after you freshen up. I’ll go next door and ask Aunt Eleanor if she wants breakfast."

Fiorello, unaware that Eleanor had moved next door, was puzzled and asked, "my... Aunt is next door?"

He had meant to say 'mom', but he caught himself just in time.

"Yep, didn’t you know? Aunt Eleanor bought the place next door and moved in yesterday."

Fiorello was silent. He knew his mother's personality all too well. Eleanor moved next door to keep an eye on him and Maggie.

"No need to call her. Aunt never eats breakfast, probably not even awake yet."

Eleanor usually loved to sleep in, not getting up until after ten.

"Oh, okay." Maggie didn't go to call. Instead, she said, "You should eat. I'll go clean up."

"Do you not want any?" Fiorello asked.

"I have to go to the hospital for a check-up today. I need to fast," Maggie explained. "Go ahead and eat. By the way, why did Visionary Futures Group choose me? With so many qualified candidates, I can't believe they picked me."

"They really have a keen eye," Fiorello knew all too well what Maggie had experienced during the job interview, but since Maggie didn't bring it up, he didn't want to scratch old wounds, either.

The interviewer, as it happened, had been fired.

Maggie smiled and said, "Well, it was all pretty bizarre, anyway."

Fiorello changed the subject. "What time is your physical?"

"I scheduled it for 9:30 on my phone..."

"I'll come with you," he offered.

Maggie initially wanted to say that Dulcinea would be accompanying her, but seeing Fiorello's insistence, she didn't say much else and turned to message Dulcinea, telling her she wouldn't need to accompany her to the hospital after all.

Maggie found it strange. Dulcinea usually loved to sleep in, yet insisted on going with her to a 9:30 appointment at the hospital for a physical. It was just a routine checkup, not an illness, and Dulcinea's nervousness left her baffled.

Dulcinea had set an alarm and was wide awake the moment she saw Maggie's message.

Fiorello accompanied Maggie to the hospital for her checkup, and the last thing they needed was for her secret to be discovered.

Dulcinea didn't even bother with her morning routine and rushed out to meet Maggie and Fiorello at the entrance to Cityhomes West.

Luckily, she made it in time and ran into Maggie just as she was heading to the hospital.

"Maggie," Dulcinea called out after parking, and Fiorello stopped his car as well.

Seeing Dulcinea, Maggie was surprised. "Didn't I mention that you didn't have to accompany me to the hospital?"

Not only had Dulcinea showed up, but she was also without makeup, which was highly unusual.

Having known Dulcinea for so many years, Maggie had rarely seen her without makeup. In Dulcinea's own words, going out without makeup was like going out without clothes. Dulcinea never left the house without her makeup on.

"I'm in a bit of a rush, I'll have to catch you up later," Dulcinea said as she turned to Fiorello. "Fiorello, can I borrow Maggie for a while? I'll go with her to the hospital for a check-up after."

Dulcinea really couldn't find a good excuse to get away with it, so she decided to just take Maggie with her and explain later.

"What's the emergency? Can I help in any way?" Fiorello casually inquired.

"You can't help," Dulcinea bluntly dismissed, looking very anxious. "It's a woman's issue, Fiorello, just let me take Maggie for a bit, and I'll bring her right back to you."

Seeing Dulcinea's urgency, Maggie said to Fiorello, "Why don't you go on to work? I'll tag along with Dulcinea."

Fiorello stared at Dulcinea for a few seconds, and in just that brief moment, Dulcinea almost couldn't keep up the facade.

Fiorello's gaze was too piercing, and if he grew suspicious, things would be troublesome.

"Fiorello, are you scared I'm going to steal your wife or something?" Dulcinea teased, "I really do have an emergency."

"Alright," Fiorello relented, telling Maggie, "If anything comes up, give me a call."

"Will do," Maggie responded as she got out of the car. She waited for Fiorello to drive away before joining Dulcinea in her car and asking, "Dulce, what happened? You seem all worked up about it?"
