Chapter 383 Found
The street was packed, and Emily walked along with her backpack.
She kept heading south by herself.
A little girl walking alone caught people's attention, and many glanced her way.
Even though she was tired, Emily kept going, eager to see her real mom.
She asked for directions as she went.
Emily was brave. When she saw a taxi, she flagged it down.
The driver asked, "Hey, why are you alone? Where are your parents?"
Emily replied, "I live in Cityhomes West. Can you take me there? My mom will pay you."
The driver saw she looked pitiful and it wasn't safe for her to be alone. After a moment, he said, "Get in."
"Thanks." Emily got in proudly. "Cityhomes West. My mom lives there."
"Okay." The driver set the GPS.
It took almost an hour to reach the entrance.
The fare was over three hundred dollars.
"Do you remember your family's phone number? Have your parents come down to get you." The driver wanted his fare after driving for an hour.
Emily shook her head. "I don't remember my mom's number. I'll ask the security guard. He knows my mom." She lied smoothly.
The driver glanced at the security booth and said, "Then go ask."
Thinking she had no bad intentions, he let her out.
Emily walked towards the guard. As she got closer, she glanced back at the driver and started running.
Before the driver and guard could react, she slipped into the building with other residents.
"Hey, little girl!" The driver quickly got out to chase her.
The guard realized what was happening, but Emily had already disappeared.
The door closed, leaving the driver outside, watching her run away.
He was furious. "Kids these days, making me drive for nothing. She won't turn out well."
He cursed and drove off, accepting his bad luck.
Just as he left, Fiorello's car slowly drove in.
Meanwhile, Emily wandered around. She didn't know which building Maggie lived in, so she started shouting, "Mom, Mom!"
Her voice echoed, and many residents looked out their windows.
When she saw people, she asked, "Do you know where my mom lives? She's Ms. Miller."
Emily only knew the last name Miller from overhearing Maggie and Paul.
The residents shook their heads. "I don't know."
The neighborhood was big, and even with a full name, it didn't mean anyone would recognize it.
Emily kept searching.
In one of the apartments, Maggie was reading a story to Adalia. Faint cries from outside registered, but she dismissed them, engrossed in the story.
Emily's voice grew hoarse from shouting, and exhaustion finally took over. She collapsed onto a flower bed, tears streaming down her face. It was getting dark, she was hungry, and the unfamiliar surroundings amplified her fear. “Mom, where are you?” she sobbed.
Rubbing her eyes, she suddenly saw a disheveled woman in front of her and screamed, "Ah!"
The woman was Susan.
She had come back looking for her son and, hearing a child cry, walked over out of curiosity.
Susan's gaze was terrifying as she stared at Emily.
Emily, scared, stood up and stopped crying. "I'm looking for my mom. Can you help me?"
Susan stepped forward, glaring. "What's your mom's name?"
Emily shook her head. "I don't know, but she's Ms. Miller. Do you know her? She lives here."
'Ms. Miller?' Susan's expression grew even more eerie.
