Chapter 563 Committing a Crime on a Rainy Night
Dulce looked at Maggie suspiciously, "Maggie, why do you keep trying to set me up with Francis? Come on, tell me, is there some conspiracy? What did Francis offer you?"
"Given your poor taste in men before, I'm worried you'll get deceived. If you date a cop, let's see who dares to trick you." Maggie smiled, "You're very cautious with me, but with men, you have no guard at all. You prioritize men over friends."
"No way." Dulce linked arms with Maggie and said with a grin, "You're number one in my heart. Men can only take a back seat. By the way, Francis invited me to his place for dinner last time."
"That's a good thing." Maggie teased, "And you say you don't have feelings for him? You've already reached this stage."
Dulce sighed, "Maggie, I was just about to tell you. Last time, his sister-in-law cooked. The meal was really uncomfortable."
"His sister-in-law doesn't like you?" Maggie realized, "He's an only child. Where did the sister-in-law come from?"
"That's the problem." Dulce said, "I only realized after I got back. His sister-in-law Wendy likes him. Wendy is the wife of his comrade Edward, who sacrificed himself to save Francis. Now Wendy and Brianna are under his care. They are practically a family of three."
Maggie understood, "With Francis's personality, he definitely wouldn't ignore Wendy and Brianna."
"I never had much for Francis to begin with, so I won't interfere." Dulce said, "Wendy works at a supermarket and relies entirely on Francis for support. To put it bluntly, Francis is her benefactor. With so many men out there, why would I take her benefactor away? Besides, if Francis were my man and he was giving money to another woman, I definitely wouldn't be happy."
Dulce's personality was like that—tough on the outside, gentle on the inside, and couldn't stand to see others suffer.
Maggie knew the situation and didn't push further, "Then find someone else. There are plenty of good men out there."
It was getting late, so Maggie didn't stay much longer. After some small talk, she left.
The rain came and went quickly.
As Maggie was leaving, it started raining again, heavily. The streets were almost empty.
Maggie's car broke down halfway. She got out with an umbrella to check and had to call for a tow truck.
The wind was howling, making eerie noises that were quite frightening.
Maggie quickly got back into the car and looked around, realizing she had stopped at the entrance of an alley.
There seemed to be a shadow and some crying sounds in the alley. Maggie couldn't tell if it was the wind or someone actually crying. It was the middle of the night, and she didn't dare to get out and check.
Maggie took out her phone to make a call, but unfortunately, there was no signal.
This wasn't some remote place, so why was there no signal?
Maggie seemed to realize something, and a chill ran down her spine.
She tried turning her phone off and on again. As she was fiddling with her phone, she didn't notice a figure slowly approaching in the rearview mirror.
A man in a black raincoat was walking out of the alley, staring intently at Maggie in the car.
The man was holding a wrench.
Just as the man was about to get close, a black SUV drove up and stopped next to Maggie's car.
The man immediately stopped and, seeing Fiorello get out of the SUV, adjusted his raincoat and walked back into the alley.
Fiorello walked to Maggie's car with an umbrella and knocked on the window.
Maggie saw the reflection in the window and was startled. She quickly rolled down the window and said, "Fiorello, what are you doing here?"
"Seeing the heavy rain, that you hadn't come back yet, and that I couldn't reach you on your phone, I came out to find you." Fiorello asked in a deep voice, "Car broke down?"
"Yeah, it broke down again." Maggie said helplessly, "No matter what car I have, it never lasts long with me."
