Chapter 80 Maggie's Mischief
Maggie, upon receiving Selena's internal call, braced herself for the inevitable. She knew it wouldn't be good news, but she had to face it with a stoic countenance.
She stood at the threshold of the office, knocking gently, "Selena," she called.
"Come in," came the curt reply.
Selena's face was a mask of seriousness, her features betraying no emotion. Maggie stepped into the room, and Selena handed her a membership card. "Ms. Cook is at the Sercial Guild Hall today. Don't say I didn't give you a chance. If you fail, I win, and I won't be satisfied with anything less."
Jones' words had left an impression on Selena, making her hesitant to take direct action. Instead, she decided to let Lily give Maggie a taste of reality.
Lily was infamous for her cunning ways. She had given Maggie a hard time in the past, and today, Selena wanted Maggie to experience the harsh realities of the workplace, to understand that it was not a playground for a high school student.
"Thank you," Maggie accepted the membership card, "I won't disappoint."
Selena sneered, "I look forward to your good news."
Exiting the office with the membership card in hand, Maggie was approached by Emily. "Did Selena give you a hard time again?" she asked.
"Sometimes, you don't need a reason to dislike someone. Sometimes, one reason is enough," Maggie replied, well aware of this truth. "I'm an anomaly in the design department."
Among a group of accomplished individuals, her status as a high school graduate made her stand out like a sore thumb.
"What did she ask you to do?" Emily inquired.
Maggie waved the membership card, "I have to meet this Ms. Cook."
"Using someone else's knife to kill, how clever," Emily warned, "Maggie, you can't go. Lily's unpredictability is not just a rumor. She has many ways to make people suffer. You will definitely be at the receiving end."
Maggie smiled, "If you say that, one would think she's a monster. Don't worry, I actually wanted to meet Lily. I was just thinking about it. Selena gave me this membership card just in time. If I want to design jewelry that satisfies the client, I must meet her and have a chat. The information Selena provided is too vague."
According to the information, Lily had only one requirement: the design had to be beautiful and unique. But beauty was subjective.
If Lily was unhappy, she could directly reject it, so Maggie had to meet Lily.
"Then I'll go with you," Emily offered, genuinely worried for Maggie.
"Good old buddy," Maggie replied without hesitation, "I don't have a car at the moment, so I'll ride with you."
Emily smiled, "No problem."
They arrived at the Sercial Guild Hall, a place Emily was quite familiar with. They both had membership cards, so gaining entry was easy.
Maggie, not having much money, and unsure if the company would reimburse her for this visit, didn't want Emily to pay. So, they decided to sit and wait in the lobby.
Maggie had Lily's contact information and tried to explain the purpose of their visit over the phone, but Lily impatiently told her to wait.
They waited from morning till evening, and then until it was dark.
"We can't just keep waiting like this," Emily finally said.
Maggie nodded, "You're right, we can't wait like this. I'll go and find out which private room Ms. Cook is in."
Emily casually mentioned, "Lily usually hangs out on the top floor, not in the private rooms."
Maggie glanced at Emily. If she knew Lily's preferences so well, she must be quite familiar with her.
It seemed that Emily and Lily moved in the same circles.
Without probing further, Maggie headed towards the top floor. They were stopped by the staff at the entrance. "Please show the invitation letter."
Emily pulled Maggie aside and whispered, "They have booked the whole place. They hold private gatherings here several times a month. Without an invitation letter, you can't get in."
Maggie retorted, "You definitely have an invitation letter."
"How do you know?" Emily was taken aback. She did have one, but she never attended these gatherings, so she never came.
Maggie smiled lightly, "Just let me sneak in with you to meet Ms. Cook. I'll treat you to a meal later."
"That's fine," Emily laughed and showed the electronic invitation. They were allowed in.
Upon entering, Maggie finally understood what it meant to attend a gathering of the wealthy.
The opulence of the party was beyond anything she had seen on television.
Emily pointed to a girl in a lemon yellow strapless dress playing darts nearby, "That's Lily."
Maggie followed her gaze. Lily, at the tender age of twenty-one, was the epitome of youthful beauty.
Just as Maggie was about to approach her, a handsome man rushed over and embraced her tightly.
Maggie, startled, couldn't break free and resorted to using her head to knock the man away.
Bang!
The handsome man was knocked to the ground, his nose bleeding profusely.
Someone shouted, "Mr. Quixote, Mr. Quixote, call an ambulance!"
