Chapter 81 Provoking a Powerhouse
The unexpected incident brought the lively party to an abrupt halt. In no time, a crowd had gathered around the man who had been inadvertently knocked down by Maggie.
Maggie herself stood frozen in shock, while Emily swiftly regained her composure and asked her in a worried tone, "Maggie, are you alright?"
Maggie could only respond with a mute nod.
At that moment, a young man pointed an accusing finger at Maggie, his voice seething with anger. "You're done for! How dare you harm Mr. Quixote! Where did you find such audacity?"
"Being embraced by Mr. Quixote is an honor."
"You're a new waitress? You don't know the rules. After injuring Mr. Quixote, you might as well be dead."
"Someone call an ambulance."
"Mr. Quixote is still bleeding, he's in bad shape..."
The collective voices of the crowd filled Maggie with dread. The sight of the unconscious man on the floor drained the color from her face.
If this situation escalated into a fatality, it would be disastrous.
Given that the majority of the partygoers were offspring of the affluent, the high regard they held for the man sprawled on the floor suggested his status was far from ordinary.
Maggie quickly stammered out an apology, "I'm sorry, I... "
"Why all the commotion? It's just a nosebleed, no one's dying." The fallen man suddenly sat upright, brushed off the concerned crowd, stood, and made his way towards Maggie.
Someone promptly handed him tissues, which he used to dab at the blood before finally turning his calculating gaze onto Maggie. "Did you bump into me? You're the first woman to ever make me bleed."
Emily, understanding the nature of men, stepped forward to intervene. "David, Maggie didn't mean to. It's just a nosebleed. Why make such a fuss? Besides, you were the one at fault initially. Who asked you to suddenly lunge and embrace Maggie?"
David Quixote scoffed, "No one has ever dared to tell me I'm wrong."
Upon hearing Emily's words, someone in the crowd recognized her and asked, "Ms. Roberts, did you bring her?"
Emily confirmed, "Yes, I brought her. Maggie is my friend."
"Maggie?" Lily approached, giving Maggie a scrutinizing look. "Are you the one who called me earlier? Maggie, the jewelry designer from Visionary Futures Group's subsidiary?" Lily had never met Maggie in person, but she had received a few calls from her and thus had a vague recollection.
Maggie quickly responded, "Yes, I'm the Maggie who called you earlier. Here's my business card. I came to confirm the details of the jewelry designer position with Ms. Cook."
With that, Maggie turned to David and said, "I apologize for my thoughtlessness and for causing you harm. It's my fault..."
Just as everyone thought Maggie was backing down, she changed her tone and said, "When you suddenly lunged at me earlier, I was so startled that my reactions were purely instinctive, it was self-defense."
David sneered, "Quite the sharp tongue."
David reached out to caress Maggie's face, but she swiftly leaned back to avoid his touch.
David found her reaction amusing, "Such an innocent woman, a rare sight. You work at Visionary Futures Group, how much do they pay you a month? I'll offer you ten times that. Be my woman from now on. Work is exhausting, let beauty rest. I'll take care of you."
David's flippant words and actions replaced the fear in Maggie's heart with anger and revulsion.
The others joined in, teasing, "You should be thanking Mr. Quixote. It's your good fortune to have caught Mr. Quixote's eye."
"It's not easy serving Mr. Quixote while working."
"Such a figure, such a face, truly stunning. Mr. Quixote has good taste."
"I bet she's here to snag a man, stop playing coy."
The crowd erupted in laughter, their eyes on Maggie filled with disdain and prejudice.
Lily stood silently on the sidelines, her face oddly grim, and she cast several glances at David.
The crass comments ignited Maggie's fury, but she knew she couldn't afford to offend these wealthy individuals. So, she responded carefully, "Mr. Quixote, I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you. I am already married."
