Chapter 69 Did I have a Child?
Maggie refrained from intruding upon the couple, bidding them a polite farewell before she made her way back to the company. She hailed a taxi and as the cityscape passed by her window, she found herself dialing Arya's number, a pressing need to clarify the unfamiliar images that had begun to haunt her mind.
Arya, in the midst of comforting Olivia, noticed Maggie's incoming call and promptly answered it. Her voice was laced with concern as she asked, "Maggie, how is your first day at work?"
"Mom, it's going well," Maggie responded, her tone deliberately evasive. "I accompanied a colleague to the hospital for her delivery. I'm heading back to the office now. She was so grateful that she asked me to be the godmother of her child."
Arya chuckled at this, "That's wonderful. It's always beneficial to maintain good relationships with your colleagues."
"Yes," Maggie agreed, her gaze drifting out of the car window. "Mom, when I saw my colleague entering the delivery room, it triggered a memory in me."
This statement took Arya by surprise, causing her face to pale slightly. She asked cautiously, "What did you remember, Maggie?"
Arya's question only served to heighten Maggie's unease. "Mom, did I suffer from a serious illness? I remember being wheeled into an operating room and holding your hand," she said.
Arya responded nonchalantly, "Yes, you did have an illness a few years ago. It was your appendectomy. You were scared and held my hand, just like when you were a child. You even cried."
Maggie was somewhat skeptical, "An appendectomy?"
"Yes," Arya confirmed firmly. "Dulcinea was there with you. Have you forgotten? Maggie, have you been under a lot of work pressure recently? Why are you having such random thoughts?"
Maggie was unsure whether to believe Arya. Her memory was a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces. Her previous bout of depression had led to selective amnesia, the doctors had said. Sometimes, she felt like she remembered everything, but often, she felt like she had forgotten something crucial.
As she thought of Ann entering the delivery room and the image of the newborn baby, her heart ached. She felt a wave of discomfort wash over her, her emotions suddenly spiraling out of control.
"Mom, I need to ask..." Maggie clutched her chest, struggling to get the words out, "Did I have a child?"
It took all her courage to voice this question. She couldn't believe it herself. She had no memory of such an event, and she had never crossed any boundaries with Samwise. How could she possibly have had a child? Yet, she couldn't suppress the question.
Her question startled both herself and Arya. "Maggie, don't overthink things. You just got married. Where would you have a child?" Arya tried to maintain her composure. "Have you been watching too many TV dramas lately or dealing with stress? Don't scare me with such nonsense. Is Fiorello's aunt pressuring you to have a child again?"
Maggie too found her question incredulous. Could it be that the recent pressure to have a baby had cast a psychological shadow over her? Fiorello had asked her in the morning if she preferred a boy or a girl, and she had witnessed Ann's water breaking during childbirth. Perhaps she was really under a lot of mental stress and had conflated reality with scenes from movies.
If she had indeed had a baby, such a monumental event, she couldn't possibly have forgotten it. And where would the child be now?
Maggie massaged her temples, "Mom, I was just joking with you. I've arrived at the company, so I'll let you go now."
While Maggie had managed to rationalize her thoughts, Arya was left terrified. She feared that Maggie might actually remember that incident, so she quickly dialed Dulcinea. She instructed Dulcinea to corroborate the story of Maggie's appendectomy if she asked about the baby, in an attempt to keep the truth concealed.
Arya realized that she might not be able to keep this secret from Maggie for much longer, but for now, she could at least try.
