Chapter 237 Fiorello's Infertility
Before Fiorello made the announcement, even Arya was unaware of Adalia's adoption.
When Fiorello spoke, the few present reacted differently, with their gazes convergent on Adalia. Eleanor liked the child, but Adalia's adoption and name change were significant events that surprised her when she heard the news. Joseph, seeing Adalia for the first time, had not paid much attention to the child until Fiorello's words drew his gaze toward her.
Adalia was thin, with clear and bright eyes and delicate features.
Arya was the first to say. "Maggie, is this true?"
Arya had previously opposed Adalia's adoption, not expecting it to happen quietly. Considering Maggie's circumstances and looking at Adalia, Arya suddenly became worried about her daughter's future.
If Fiorello found out about Maggie's previous child, it might lead to a rift in the family. Fiorello would leave Maggie with a child, albeit not her own, and the situation would revert to its initial state.
In the past, to Maggie's happiness, she had sent away her own granddaughter. Now, with Maggie adopting another child, wouldn't that effort have been in vain?
The atmosphere at the dinner table became somewhat awkward. Holden and Dulce dared not speak up, merely observing from the sidelines.
Maggie glanced at Eleanor, Joseph, and Arya's expressions, then said, "It's true. We have completed all the paperwork and obtained the identity certificate. "
With the decision already made, Arya found it difficult to say anything. She looked at Adalia and could only sigh, believing it was fate.
Fiorello patted Adalia's head and said, "I really like Adalia. Since I have no children, it's fitting for Maggie and me to adopt this child together. We are Adalia's parents, and the responsibility of raising her falls on us from now on. "
"Stop talking nonsense." Joseph couldn't hold back and slammed the table. Fiorello frowned and gave Joseph a stern look.
Leanor, fearing a quarrel between them, discreetly tugged at Joseph's sleeve, indicating they should discuss any issues at home.
Adalia, startled by Joseph's outburst, instinctively sought refuge in Maggie's arms.
Maggie found Joseph's anger inexplicable.
Eleanor intervened with a smile. "Let's eat."
Holden, sensing the tension, quickly interjected, "Maggie, let me pour you a drink. Let's eat, let's eat. This fish dish tastes great."
Although Arya thought Maggie and Fiorello were being a bit unreasonable, she refrained from saying much in front of everyone. She was also surprised to see Joseph slam the table.
Fiorello set down his glass and declared, "The Identity certificate is in place, so this matter is settled."
Joseph, with a serious expression, didn't say much more, even with Eleanor's attempts to intervene.
The rest of the meal proceeded relatively smoothly, with Joseph notably quiet. After dinner, Joseph presented Maggie with a pearl necklace as a gift and then took his leave. Maggie quickly gestured for Fiorello to see him off and offer some consolation.
Fiorello nodded and went to see the guests off.
After Eleanor and the others left, Dulce took Adalia to the children's room to play.
Arya also said, "Maggie, how could you make such a big decision without discussing it beforehand? Although Fiorello is without parents, his aunt and uncle seem to treat him well. They probably regard Fiorello as their own son. It was appropriate to discuss such a significant matter. "
"This is something we didn't think through," Maggie said, "I didn't expect such a strong reaction from Fiorello's uncle."
At the entrance of the neighborhood, Joseph, who had been suppressing his emotions all night, finally exploded, reprimanding, "Fiorello, you are becoming more and more disrespectful. You got married without informing me and your mother, and now you're adopting a child without telling us. You make all these decisions without even informing us. You are out of line."
"Dad, I'm sorry," Fiorello admitted his mistake. " I didn't mean to disrespect you; the situation was urgent.”
Eleanor also said, "Son, you and Maggie have been married for a few months now. You will eventually have your own children. We are not against you adopting a child, but isn't this a bit sudden? Even if you like children, you could have waited until you had your own before adopting. By then, adopting seven or eight wouldn't be a problem."
Holden sat in the car, unable to speak, just hoping not to get involved.
Fiorello furrowed his brow and confessed, "Dad, Mom, Maggie, and I won't have our own children in the future."
Just as the parents were surprised and puzzled, Fiorello added, "I can't conceive."
