Chapter 43 Mother-in-law Moved Next Door
Maggie turned to see who had entered.
It was Chief Secretary William of Fiorello.
Maggie didn’t recognize him, but William recognized her.
It was his boss's wife after all.
The male interviewer who had just insulted Maggie offered a sycophantic smile and said, "Mr. Harrison, what brings you here? Did Mr. Flores send you for something?"
At Visionary Futures Group, William was like the emperor's right-hand man. Everyone showed him respect.
"I just came to have a look," Harrison didn't say that he was there on the CEO's instruction. He deliberately walked up to the interview table and glanced at Maggie's design draft.
Although as a man he wasn't particularly interested in jewelry, seeing Maggie's drawings sparked an urge to see the finished pieces.
Observing William examining Maggie's work, the male interviewer chuckled and said, "Mr. Harrison, this was a mistake by the HR department. I was just about to ask this interviewee to leave. There’s no way Visionary Futures Group would hire someone with only a high school diploma."
Hearing this, Harrison felt relieved that he arrived in time. Otherwise, the boss’s wife would have been unfairly dismissed by these fools.
Affronted, Maggie stated, "If your company does not hire those with only a high school diploma, then please do not advertise for such positions. May I have my design draft back?"
Harrison noticed the crumpled resume in the trash can and immediately realized the indignity Maggie had suffered.
"Ms. Miller, on behalf of the company, I apologize for the rudeness you've been shown. Visionary Futures Group, having posted the job advert, will honor it. No one will disregard that. I've looked at your design draft and it is quite impressive. Our company values qualifications, but we value talent more," Harrison said as he respectfully handed back her draft. He then asked symbolically, "What is the inspiration behind your jewelry designs?"
The CEO's chief secretary apologizing to an interviewee?
This scene left everyone in the room stunned, and they began to wonder if Maggie had connections they were unaware of.
William had a humble demeanor, and Maggie thought well of him.
"I want everyone to wear the jewelry I design. Sentiments that can't be put into words can be captured in the design, conveying love to each other, marking the most precious moments shared. True lovers eventually unite."
"That's very good," William nodded, saying, "Ms. Miller, please go back and wait for a phone call."
Maggie was a bit puzzled. Was she being rejected?
In her past experience with job interviews, she was always told to wait for notification, and then there would be no follow-up.
Waiting for notification was the most euphemistic way to say no.
Maggie didn't argue. She gathered her design portfolio and resume and walked out.
As soon as she left, William told the male interviewer who had ridiculed Maggie, "Go to the HR department to get your final paycheck. You don't need to come to work tomorrow."
Hearing this, the male interviewee's face went pale. "Why, Mr. Secretary?"
Was it because of Maggie, the high school graduate?
Did Maggie have some powerful background?
"You are supposed to attract talent for our company. If you're biased, how can you recruit effectively?" William said. "If you're not suited for this job, then it's time to step aside for someone more capable."
William didn't have the authority to fire employees, but he knew the temperament of Fiorello. Insulting the wife of the owner of Visionary Futures Group and expecting to keep your job?
The male interviewer didn't understand what made Maggie so influential or who he had offended, even after his dismissal.
Maggie left after her interview, unaware of the events that unfolded afterward.
She didn't harbor much hope for the job.
Returning home, it was nearly four in the afternoon when Maggie went to the market to buy groceries.
Exiting the elevator, she spotted Eleanor directing a group of movers into the next-door apartment.
"Aunt," Maggie asked with curiosity, "What's this about?"
"Maggie, you're back," Eleanor said with a smile upon seeing Maggie. "I just bought the place next door, so as of today, I'm moving in. We're going to be neighbors now, Maggie. Are you excited?"
Maggie was at a loss for words.
A house here costs at least ten million, she thought, and she bought one just like that?
Just to be her neighbor?
"Aunt, are you serious?" Maggie managed to respond, still stunned by the news. "You really bought the house next door?"
"Yeah," Eleanor said, grinning. "Now when I'm bored, I can come over and chat with you. Oh, and I love to cook, so if there's anything you're craving, just let me know. I'll whip it up for you, so you don't have to work so hard."
What Eleanor really wanted was to play matchmaker for Maggie and Fiorello. She was eager to see her grandchildren sooner rather than later. As a mother-in-law, she had to take matters into her own hands.
