Chapter 229 Rescue

Adalia felt very cold, wearing only a thin short-sleeved shirt and thin pants.

Cyberland had already entered autumn. The weather was cold, and the temperature difference between day and night was even greater.

The icy tiles were impossible to sleep on; she wanted to go to bed, but Susan wouldn't allow it.

Susan and her son slept in one of the house's two bedrooms, while Adalia locked the other to keep her from sneaking in at night.
Adalia felt helpless and scared, but she dared not cry. Susan would beat her if she woke her up.

Adalia glanced at Susan's room, seeing no movement inside; she quietly climbed onto the sofa to sleep.

The sofa was a bit warmer. Without a blanket, she used the sofa cover to wrap herself.

Even so, she was still very cold, curled up like a pitiful cat.

Adalia hugged herself tightly, starting to miss Maggie's warm embrace.

Adalia closed her eyes, trying hard to sleep, thinking that she wouldn't feel cold once asleep.

She silently prayed, "Dad, when will you come back, Dad?"

Only when Alan was home would her life be a bit better.

Perhaps she was too tired; Adalia eventually fell asleep, her hands and feet ice-cold, like ice cubes. She wanted to go back to the tiled floor before Susan woke up, but she couldn't get up. Her forehead was burning with fever.

Adalia had a dream: she was sleeping on a soft, big bed, feeling warm.

"Adalia, no one allowed you to sleep on the sofa."

Susan came out of the room and saw Adalia sleeping on the sofa. She was very angry, so she picked up a stick to hit her.

We specifically used this stick to discipline Adalia.
Adalia awoke in agony, her entire body aching from the beating. She grabbed Susan's stick, begging, "Mom, please don't hit me; I was wrong; I won't do it again."

"You little wretch, trying to play tricks with me. I instructed you to sleep on the floor, and you have the audacity to sleep on the sofa. The sofa is now filthy, and I will slap you to death.

Susan got angry, kicked Adalia, raised the stick, and beat her mercilessly.

The neighbors next door shook their heads; the pitiful cries were unbearable to listen to.

Susan kept beating her, and suddenly, Adalia fell to the ground, motionless.

Susan thought Adalia was pretending to be dead, so she kicked her with her foot. "You little wretch, stop pretending to be dead; get up and make milk for your brother."

Adalia still didn't respond. Susan panicked again, quickly dropped the stick, and reached out to feel her breath—there was still some.

She then touched Adalia's forehead. It was burning hot, and she had a fever.

Susan didn't take Adalia to the hospital. It would cost money. She also didn't care about Adalia. She took her son out for breakfast.
Adalia lay on the ground, running a high fever that wouldn't subside. After Susan left the house, she had breakfast and was then called to play poker, completely forgetting about Adalia still being sick at home. Adalia didn't go to school, and when the teacher tried calling Susan, nobody answered.
Maggie went to the school to check on Adalia, only to find out that she hadn't shown up that day. Concerned, Maggie went to Susan's house to look for her.
She rang the doorbell repeatedly, but no one answered.
At that moment, a neighbor came out and asked, "Who are you looking for?"
"Hello, I'm a resident of Building Three. Has this family gone out? Have you seen Adalia? She didn't go to school today, so I came to check on her."
"I haven't seen Adalia. I did hear her crying this morning, as if someone was beating her. That poor child cried for a long time before going quiet. I have no idea where Susan went."
Upon hearing this, Maggie's heart clenched. She knocked on the door, calling out, "Adalia, Adalia, are you home? Please answer."
There was still no response. Maggie grew anxious and tried calling Alan, but no one answered. Finally, she had to call the community police.
Maggie explained the situation and showed her identification, and only then did the police decide to break in.
Maggie discovered Adalia lying on the ground, covered in bruises from the beating, and suffering from a high fever. "She has a fever and needs to go to the hospital." Maggie picked up Adalia and said to the police, "Please take us to the hospital; this child has a high fever."
