Chapter 60 When It Rains, It Pours
Samwise couldn't figure it out. He had only been back in the country for a short while, had handled things smoothly, and it wasn't likely that he'd offended anyone.
At that moment, Jane called again, this time with a greater urgency in her voice. "Samwise, did you make enemies with someone? Is someone targeting you? Do you realize the seriousness of this situation? Your future is ruined..."
Jane rambled on, which only infuriated Samwise all the more.
Samwise yelled into the phone, "I don't need you to remind me."
After shouting that, he hung up the phone.
Andrew spoke anxiously, "Sam, what did you do out there? The capital is full of powerful figures. We need to keep a low profile, and this time it's clear someone is setting up our family."
Sarah also rushed to say, "Sam, please talk to us."
Samwise racked his brain but besides Maggie and Fiorello, he had not offended anyone recently.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
The sudden knocking startled the whole family. Samwise steadied himself before opening the door.
Seeing the law enforcement officers standing outside, his expression shifted and he struggled to appear composed, "Can I help you with anything?"
The officers showed their badges and said, "Is Andrew Gamgee at home? He is suspected of illegal activity and needs to come with us."
Hearing they were there for him, Andrew's face went pale with fear.
Samwise looked at his father, Andrew, but was helpless, only able to watch as the law enforcement officers took his father away.
As they were taking Andrew away, he shouted loudly to Samwise, "Sam, you have to save your dad, Sam..."
"Andrew..." Sarah cried out as she followed them, desperate with worry.
Caught completely off guard by the sudden family crisis, Samwise was utterly confused.
Throughout the night, he made endless phone calls seeking help. However, all those who used to be close and suck up to him were now making excuses to avoid him.
Samwise was so angry he threw his phone. Sarah was left crying ceaselessly in the living room, urging Samwise to quickly find a way to get Andrew out.
The Gamgee family's food manufacturing business was facing profound troubles. In an industry where consumer trust is paramount, the detection of harmful substances exceeding safe limits in their products could spell a cataclysmic disaster.
Once a reputation was lost, a comeback was nearly impossible.
Not long after Andrew was taken away by the authorities, word got out, and the company's business partners began to show up at their door, demanding compensation and persistently pounding on the entrance.
Inside the house, Samwise was too scared to venture out, nervously peeking through the peephole at the chaotic scene outside.
The doorstep was crowded with angry creditors.
Sarah was so frightened that she cried quietly, not daring to make a sound. The mother and son spent the night on edge, jumpy at every little noise.
Constant phone calls from debt collectors forced Samwise to unplug the landlines.
As dawn approached, the creditors finally dispersed, and an exhausted Sarah fell asleep. Samwise, still on the sofa in the living room, drifted in a daze.
After an indeterminate time, a knock on the door jolted the weary Samwise awake. He approached the door and peered through the peephole to find Jane standing outside.
Only then did he open the door, and before Jane could speak, she was hurriedly pulled inside, and the door quickly shut behind her.
Jane was taken aback by his cautious behavior.
Samwise inquired, "What's the situation at the office now?"
Jane collected her thoughts and replied, "The landlord came this morning to terminate our lease and demanded we move out immediately. The families involved in that indecent exposure case and the divorce case you handled are protesting in front of the office with banners."
In the indecent exposure case, Samwise had helped the perpetrator escape punishment for money, driving the victim to suicide by jumping off a building.
During the divorce case, he had manipulated evidence to claim the wife was mentally ill and, as a full-time homemaker with no income, helped secure child custody for the abusive husband.
The husband only fought for custody to spite his wife, not out of love for the child. After winning, he left the child with the grandparents, who were too old to properly supervise, leading to a tragic accident that killed the child.
Unable to cope with the loss, the child's mother took her own life with sleeping pills.
The unfolding series of tragedies was a grim testament to the serious consequences resulting from a reckless pursuit of profit and a disregard for moral responsibility.
In both tragedies, Samwise played a role in the wrongdoing. Now, as the victims' families staged protests, banners in hand, Samwise's reputation lay in tatters, with the possibility of legal repercussions looming.
Jane's words turned Samwise's face ghostly pale as he slumped onto the couch, defeated.
Suddenly, Samwise erupted in rage, "Who organized those families to make such a scene? And who leaked my overseas affairs? Jane, besides you, no one back home knows. Did you betray me?"
