Chapter 63 A Suitable Matriarch for the Flores Family
Before Maggie could utter a word, the line went dead. Samwise had abruptly ended the call.
An early morning call just to spew venom?
Maggie's brows knitted together in confusion, unable to comprehend the source of Samwise's fury.
It was, after all, Samwise's own shameless actions that had led to Fiorello's arrest. So why was Samwise now seething with rage?
Just as Maggie was grappling with this conundrum, her phone rang again. It was Dulcinea. "Maggie," she said, "Samwise's law firm is under investigation, and their factory has shut down. The news is all over our classmates' group chat."
"What? How did this happen?" Maggie was taken aback.
It felt as though the world had shifted overnight.
"He had it coming," Dulcinea retorted indignantly. "Samwise is nothing but a hypocrite. He almost had me fooled too. Thank goodness you got married, or I would have made a terrible mistake trying to pair you two up. That would have been a disservice to you. Samwise would do anything for money, even driving people to suicide. Their families are causing a ruckus at his law firm."
Maggie was at a loss for words, a feeling of dread creeping into her heart.
It was a sense of fear that had come after the fact.
Samwise, in his relentless pursuit of wealth and fame, had shown no regard for the truth, driving his victims to suicide. Those who held a grudge against him would surely not let this go lightly.
A wave of panic washed over Maggie as she recalled the threatening phone call from Samwise.
"Who leaked all this?" Maggie asked.
She had just made an enemy of Samwise, and now his dirty deeds were being exposed. She was certain to be in his crosshairs.
If Samwise were to bother Fiorello again, what would she do?
"Evil deeds never go unpunished. Perhaps someone couldn't bear it any longer and decided to expose him. The reason Samwise returned to the country is likely because he couldn't stay abroad any longer," Dulcinea said, hinting at her knowledge of the culprit, though she refrained from revealing it.
There were certain things she had to keep from Maggie for Fiorello's sake.
For now, it seemed Fiorello was doing a good job of protecting Maggie, so she didn't need to worry. Her only concern was to prevent Maggie's secret from being exposed, which could potentially ruin her relationship with Fiorello.
Until Maggie was firmly established as Mrs. Flores, she had to do her best to keep that secret hidden and facilitate the relationship between Maggie and Fiorello.
Even as Samwise faced his comeuppance, Maggie couldn't shake off her unease.
After a lengthy conversation with Dulcinea, Maggie headed to work, only to run into Emily, a fellow interviewee.
Emily was pleasantly surprised to see Maggie. "Maggie, you got the job too? That's wonderful! We'll be colleagues now."
Seeing a familiar face in a new environment put Maggie at ease.
"Have you started working already?" Maggie asked.
"Yes, I have," Emily replied with a grin. "It's a shame, though. You were right. We couldn't work at the headquarters and had to settle for this subsidiary, which puts a considerable distance between me and my crush."
Maggie chuckled. "Take it slow. Chasing a guy is easy. You're so beautiful, you'll catch up to him in no time."
Emily beamed at this, taking Maggie's hand. "When I become Mr. Flores' girlfriend and the mistress of Visionary Futures Group, I'll promote you to chief designer."
Maggie smiled. "That sounds wonderful! I'll hold you to that."
Their conversation flowed easily, and they quickly became friends. Emily then remembered something. "By the way, the interviewer from last time was fired. I don't know why, but I heard it happened after your interview. Do you know anything about it?"
"I have no idea," Maggie responded, genuinely surprised by the news.
"Oh," Emily said, deciding not to probe further. "You should go check in. The chief designer, Selena, will be coming today. If all goes well, we'll be assigned as her assistants."
Working as an assistant to the chief designer was a dream job for many, and it was just a step away from becoming a real designer.
Maggie first went to the HR department to check in. The HR staff, upon seeing Maggie's information, treated her with unexpected respect and swiftly processed her paperwork.
"Maggie, welcome aboard. We're colleagues now."
"Thank you," Maggie replied, puzzled by the HR department's courteous treatment. It seemed that people in big companies had good manners and didn't discriminate against her high school education.
The salary offered by the company was surprisingly high, exceeding Maggie's expectations. She would receive a monthly salary of fifteen thousand dollars during her three-month probation period.
Big companies must indeed have deep pockets to offer such high salaries even during the probation period.
Emily was waiting outside the door, and when Maggie emerged, they went to the design department together.
Meanwhile, at the Visionary Futures Group building, in the CEO's office.
Fiorello was engrossed in his paperwork when Holden walked in. "Fiorello, why don't you arrange an assistant position for my sister-in-law? And she's being transferred to a subsidiary. Isn't that unfair to her?"
Fiorello replied calmly, "Let her climb the ladder step by step. It's also a good opportunity for her to familiarize herself with our company's jewelry line, so she can take over in the future."
Holden suddenly understood. "Fiorello, you're paving the way for her."
Fiorello put down his paperwork and said, "She will make a suitable matriarch for the Flores family."
