Chapter 504 Retrieving Surveillance Footage from the Accident Site
No one had ever told Maggie about any of this. The baby was gone, and bringing up anything else would just make her sad.
Maggie kept thinking about how her baby might have had a chance if it weren't for that traffic jam. She just couldn't accept it.
That day, she was in so much pain she passed out and had no idea what happened next.
Arya felt super guilty and said, "The doctor mentioned that if we had gotten the baby to the hospital a bit earlier, they could've done a C-section. There have been cases where a 5-pound baby survived. Medical tech is pretty advanced now. It was all my fault. If only I could drive, if only I had taken you to the hospital sooner."
"Why was there a traffic jam that day?" Maggie's hands were cold. A terrible thought crossed her mind, and she muttered, "There are two routes to the hospital. Why did we take the one with the traffic jam?"
Arya said, "Isabella was driving. We didn't know about the traffic jam until we were already on that road. There was an accident, and traffic was blocked both ways. Isabella tried to get people to move, but it didn't help."
Maggie knew the routes from Sunset Hills to the hospital well. There were only two, and the distances were about the same.
Usually, if there were a traffic accident, the navigation system would broadcast alerts so people could choose an alternate route in advance; why didn't Isabella take a different route that day?
Plus, the road where the accident happened wasn't usually busy at that time because there was a school and a construction zone for the past six months. The road had narrowed, and most people avoided it.
Maggie thought of something, took off her apron, and said, "Mom, I need to go out for a bit. You should rest early."
"Maggie, it's so late. Where are you going?" Arya asked, worried.
"I need to talk to Francis about something. I'll be back soon." Maggie put on her coat and hurried out.
She drove her newly bought used car, calling Francis while heading to the traffic police station.
Francis had just finished a case and was home when he got Maggie's call. He asked, puzzled, "What's up?"
Maggie got straight to the point. "I'm heading to the traffic police station on Harmony Street. I want to check some surveillance footage and need your help. I'll treat you to dinner later."
If she went to the traffic police station out of the blue, no one would pay attention to her, let alone let her see the footage.
She thought of Francis, hoping his influence would help.
Francis was silent for a few seconds and then said, "Are you bribing me?"
"This is called helping a friend," Maggie said, "I'm already on my way to Harmony Street. I'll wait for you there."
After speaking, Maggie hung up, not worried at all that Francis wouldn't help.
Francis shook his head at the disconnected call, a helpless smile on his lips. It was the first time someone had so blatantly used his influence.
Francis grabbed his coat and headed out to the traffic police station.
Maggie arrived first. When she saw Francis, she was very touched. "Thanks."
Francis replied, "Don't thank me yet. First, tell me why you need to see the footage. If it's something illegal, I won't do it."
Maggie said, "I want to see the traffic situation on Harmony Street the day I had my miscarriage. I need to clear up a doubt in my mind."
"What doubt?" Francis asked as he walked into the traffic police station.
Maggie followed him and said, "There were two routes to the hospital that day. Isabella was driving but took the road where the accident happened, causing a delay in getting me to the hospital, and the baby couldn't be saved."
With a policeman's keen sense, Francis stopped and realized the issue. "You suspect Isabella deliberately delayed?"
Maggie met Francis's gaze and said, "I have reason to suspect her because she has fallen for my ex."
Francis frowned. "Fiorello's charm attracts a lot of unwanted attention."
"But you're the one he got right," he added.
Maggie replied, "Thanks for the high praise."
