Chapter 49 Go Argue with Your Husband's Mistress

James's mind was preoccupied with the child Grace carried, leaving no room to spar with Isabella.

"Isabella, just go back home and stop making a scene," he retorted.

His words only fueled Isabella's anger. "The adulterer isn't embarrassing, but I am for being a victim? We've been married eight years, James. Can you honestly say you've been fair to me? Are you even human for doing this?"

A public spat between a wife and the mistress instantly drew a crowd of onlookers.

People gossiped about Grace and some even criticized Isabella for being too domineering, reminding her that Grace was pregnant with a child.

Grace, buoyed by the few defending her, arrogantly said, "Isabella, you've been with James for eight years and can't have a child. You can't give birth and yet you want to deny James from having a future? He lost feelings for you a long time ago. Smarten up and divorce him already. Stop hogging the spotlight."

Maggie, who witnessed the exchange, was dumbfounded.

Had the role of the 'other woman' become so bold these days?

Infertility was Isabella's Achilles' heel, and seeing the mistress pregnant with her husband's child pushed her over the edge once more.

Amidst Isabella's renewed breakdown, James remained silent. Furious, Isabella swung her designer bag at Grace's head.

"I'll knock some sense into you, you shameless home-wrecker!" she exclaimed.

James shielded Grace with his body, grabbing Isabella as he reprimanded her, "What's gotten into you? You want to make a scene for others to laugh at?"

"I'm crazy, sure, driven mad by you two cheaters!" Isabella retorted, furiously trying to lash out at Grace but ending up in a tussle with James. James, riled up and at the end of his patience, slapped Isabella with such force that she stumbled and fell to the ground.

"Look at what you've become, nothing but a mess," he scorned her.

Isabella quieted down, disbelief etched on her face as she gazed at the man she'd shared her life and bed with for eight years.

"You hit me for her, for this home wrecker? James, you're going to regret this."

Seeing Isabella struck brought a flash of satisfaction to Grace's eyes, though she quickly feigned agonizing pain, clutching at James and crying out, "James, my belly hurts so much."

James, panic stricken, could no longer spare a thought for Isabella. He scooped up Grace in his arms and hurried toward the emergency room.

"You bastard, James," Isabella hurled after his retreating figure, but her insults did nothing to slow his steps.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Isabella let the tears flow.

Maggie stood to the side, torn between offering help and pretending she saw nothing.

She knew all too well what kind of person Isabella was. Any attempt to intervene would only make her a target.

Sure enough, Isabella's anger soon found a new focus in the crowd—Maggie.

"So, you're here to enjoy my misery, huh? Did you know about James all along? That's why you're here, isn't it, Maggie? Jealous that I married better than you, protecting those two dogs?"

Maggie was speechless. "Don't bite the hand of every person you see. What happens between you and your husband is none of my business."

Even if she had known about James's affair and the pregnancy, would Isabella have thanked her for the warning? Hardly likely.

Dulcinea snapped, "If you've got the guts, go argue with your husband's mistress or confront your own husband. Why are you making a scene in front of us? It's not like we told your husband to cheat or got his mistress pregnant."

Isabella turned pale with anger, but Dulcinea grabbed Maggie's arm. "Come on, Maggie, let's get out of here."

Maggie knew Isabella was fuming, but there was no love lost between them, so sticking around to offer comfort seemed pointless.

As Maggie and Dulcinea were leaving, Isabella bellowed from behind, "Maggie, if I'm not going to have it easy, neither will you!"

Maggie felt today wasn't her lucky day. Why was she being dragged into James's infidelity? Isabella seemed to be taking out all her frustration on her.

Maggie didn't take the threat to heart. She figured all she needed to do was to keep her distance from Isabella.

After leaving the hospital, Maggie and Dulcinea went about their day. They had lunch, and then Dulcinea had to attend to some business at her beauty salon, so Maggie took the bus home alone.

No sooner had Maggie arrived home than Arya's call came through. "Maggie, your cousin's in trouble. Your aunt just called me—your cousin's husband has indeed cheated. Isabella is making a fuss about getting a divorce. I'm on my way to your aunt's place to try and calm things..."

"Yeah, Mom, I know," Maggie settled herself on the couch. "I ran into her at the hospital. Mom, you might want to stay out of it. No good will come of it. It'll just bring you trouble."
