Chapter 56 Maggie, Worried for Him
Maggie couldn't just sit at home after hanging up the phone. "Dulce, are you sure you don't have any contacts that can help?"
"I actually don't," Dulcinea admitted. "But rest assured, Maggie...” Dulcinea paused, realizing Maggie didn't know about Fiorello's connections. "How about this, go home and I'll make some calls to see if I know anyone familiar with the police station."
Dulcinea was trying to just buy some time and keep Maggie from worrying.
"Okay, please hurry, I'll wait for your call."
Maggie ended the call, her mind wrought with concern for Fiorello. She got in her car and drove to the police station.
Even if there wasn't much she could do, she wanted to at least be there to see what was happening.
When Maggie pulled up to the station, she had barely stepped out of her car when she saw Samwise also getting out of a vehicle.
"Samwise, you're despicable and shameless," Maggie lashed out at Samwise. "Drop the lawsuit now."
"Look, Maggie, I've already warned your husband. He refused to grovel for mercy. We live in a society governed by law, and I'm just defending my rights legally," Samwise retorted with a sneer. "Everyone has to pay the price for their actions."
"How can you be so shameless?" Maggie was starting to lose her composure. "Drop the lawsuit. I'll cover all the damages. Just name your price."
"Maggie, you know money isn't what I want," Samwise said, hands in his pockets, with a cold smirk. "You know exactly what I'm after."
Maggie trembled with rage. Was this vile man really the same Samwise she knew?
"Keep dreaming," Maggie ground out through clenched teeth.
With a scoff, Samwise stepped closer. "There's one way to make me drop the suit—have your husband kneel down, apologize to me, and admit that he's not worth a dime."
"Samwise, you jerk!" In a fury, Maggie slapped Samwise across his face.
Instantly enraged, Samwise touched his cheek with his tongue and coldly smiled. "Looks like I need to get checked out again. Your slap? I'll add that to your husband's tab. One or two years behind bars for him shouldn't be a problem."
Hearing that Fiorello might go to jail, panic set in for Maggie. As much as she detested Samwise, she had to suppress her anger.
"How much money do you want to drop the suit?" Maggie asked, barely keeping her anger in check. "And don't get all high and mighty with me, Samwise. Just because you've read a few law books doesn't mean you're somebody. If you don't back off, I'll get a better lawyer and fight you to the bitter end."
No way she would give in to Samwise's demand. It was out of the question.
Samwise replied with disdain, "Maggie, do you really have the resources—the money and the time—to drag this out with me? I can just prolong this case indefinitely, which will have your husband rotting in jail for years. The longer the trial is delayed, the longer he stays locked up on my behalf. No rush for me. I've got all the time in the world. This is the price for deceiving me back in the day."
Samwise's shamelessness had refreshed Maggie's perception of him.
For the safety of Fiorello, Maggie restrained herself and explained, "I have never deceived you, I truly wasn't playing the field, you were the one who left first, Samwise. What right do you have to take your anger out on an innocent person? Our issues shouldn't involve Fiorello. If you have any grievances, direct them at me; leave him out of it."
Samwise looked at Maggie coldly. The more she tried to protect Fiorello and showed urgency on his behalf, the stronger the rage grew inside him.
"Maggie, you're really shameless. Still having the audacity to deny everything. Do you want me to spill what you did back in college?" Samwise taunted, "Stop playing innocent in front of me. Filthy."
Maggie was genuinely baffled. What had she done in her college days to make Samwise so angry? Had she really forgotten something that significant?
