Chapter 685 Unable to Achieve Fairness
Adalia felt a bit wronged by the scolding, her eyes red and her hands nervously clutching the hem of her shirt.
She also called Eleanor "Grandma." The grandma she remembered wasn't like this; she used to be very loving and never spoke harshly.
Why had Grandma changed?
Even though Adalia was young, she could keenly sense that Eleanor no longer liked her.
A child's heart is very sensitive.
This scene was very familiar to Adalia; it reminded her of the times Susan had yelled at her.
Before Susan had her little brother, she had been very kind to Adalia. But after her brother was born, Susan would either hit or scold her.
Having already suffered abuse and been imprisoned for several months, Adalia was deeply traumatized. She just wanted to play with her brother. Hearing Eleanor's accusations, she lost control of her emotions, clenching her fists tightly, her teeth gritted, and her little face turning red with frustration.
Eleanor kept talking, "Adalia, did you hear what I said? Especially the heads of your little brother and sister, you must never touch them. If something happens, it will be a big problem."
Adalia covered her ears and screamed.
She couldn't speak, so this was the only way she could vent.
Adalia kept screaming, her voice particularly loud and piercing, scaring Nate and Katie into tears. Their cries mixed with Adalia's screams, leaving Eleanor at a loss.
Eleanor picked up Nate, trying to soothe him while scolding Adalia, "Why are you so unruly? Adalia, stop it, you're scaring your brother and sister."
Adalia continued to scream, looking fierce and menacing.
Arya heard the noise and quickly ran upstairs, "What's going on, Adalia, what's wrong?"
The nanny and Celine also rushed over. Eleanor quickly instructed the nanny, "You soothe Katie. Arya, you handle Adalia. This child suddenly started screaming and scared Katie and Nate to tears."
Adalia's angry outburst was frightening, and it was the first time Arya had seen her like this.
"Adalia, Adalia," Arya said, hugging Adalia and taking her outside.
Celine followed them out; her job was to take care of Adalia.
Adalia was very unstable, continuously yelling and gritting her teeth like an angry little beast, and Arya couldn't calm her down.
"Arya, let me try," Celine said, taking Adalia from Arya's arms.
Suddenly, Adalia bit Celine's shoulder. Celine endured the pain without saying anything, holding Adalia and taking her to her room, trying to use the quiet space to calm her down.
The nursery was also chaotic, with Katie and Nate crying their hearts out, impossible to soothe, leaving Eleanor anxious.
The more the babies cried, the more Eleanor felt that Adalia was being unreasonable.
The house was in chaos, far from harmonious. Arya didn't need to ask to guess what had happened.
It must have been that Adalia tried to interact with her siblings and was scolded by Eleanor.
Adalia had always been sensitive and fragile. Arya had been very careful with her, but repeated grievances were too much for a child to bear.
Adalia was only seven years old this year.
In the room, Celine held Adalia tightly, stroking her head and soothing her gently, "Adalia, Ms. Hughes is here. Don't be afraid. Calm down first, and tell Ms. Hughes what's wrong, okay?"
Celine was very gentle and genuinely cared for Adalia. She knew about Adalia's past and felt very sorry for her.
Adalia's emotions gradually stabilized, and she lay in Celine's arms without speaking. She didn't talk about her grievances, but Celine slowly coaxed her until she found out what had happened.
Celine was just a hired teacher in this household and couldn't interfere in these matters. The different treatment of children by adults was very common, especially since the two newborns were biological children, and Adalia was an illegitimate child, making the difference even more pronounced.
Before Katie and Nate were born, there was no comparison. Now, subtle changes were bound to happen, and perhaps even the people involved wouldn't notice their own unfairness.
