Chapter 365 The Final Game
Olivia's words really shook Adalia, making her even more insecure.
When Arya came back with the phone, Adalia had stopped crying—too scared by Olivia to shed another tear.
Arya didn't notice anything off with Adalia.
On the way, Adalia was unusually quiet and obedient.
At the Cityhomes West apartments entrance, Arya held Adalia's hand as they got out of the car. "Olivia, Isabella, drive safe and take care."
"Okay," Isabella replied, started the car, and drove off.
Now, it was just Olivia and Isabella in the car.
Isabella said, "Mom, stop saying stuff like that. What if Maggie finds out?"
"I don't care if she does. I was just teasing her kid. Who knew Adalia'd be so scared and cry?" Olivia said sarcastically. "I'm her aunt. Even if she finds out, she won't do anything. Does she really think marrying into the Flores family makes her some high-society lady?"
Maggie had helped Isabella a lot before, and Olivia had softened her stance on Maggie, but only because Maggie had once been worse off than them.
Now that Maggie was doing better, Olivia felt jealous.
Isabella stayed quiet, which only egged Olivia on. "And you, why are you so useless? When are you divorcing James? You're already in your thirties. If you keep dragging this out, you'll be older and divorced. How will you find someone then?"
Olivia's nagging made Isabella even more anxious about James.
"Mom, I can handle my own stuff. I don't plan on getting married again."
"If you don't get married, what will you do?" Olivia got anxious. "Isabella, you have to get married. Your dad and I are waiting for grandkids. We sold the house to give you money for that coffee shop. We'll need you in the future."
Isabella snapped, "Mom, look at my marriage with James; it's a mess. I'm over thirty, have achieved nothing, have an unhappy marriage, and no kids."
"Yeah, how did you end up like this? You didn't use your resources well. We didn't force you to marry James. I told you he was unreliable, and now you see I'm right."
"When James got promoted to director, you didn't say that. You praised him everywhere. Now everyone thinks it's my fault. If it weren't for you, my marriage wouldn't be this bad."
Olivia got defensive. "What, you're blaming me now? Isabella, you chose James. It's not my fault."
"It is your fault."
They started arguing in the car.
At a red light, Isabella slammed on the brakes, causing Olivia to lurch forward and then be pulled back by the seatbelt.
This startled Olivia. She wanted to scold Isabella but seeing her gripping the steering wheel with a furious expression, she held back.
The argument paused as they both calmed down.
When the light turned green, Isabella started the car again. Olivia, sitting in the passenger seat, said, "If you're not doing as well as others, then compete with them. Don't fight with me. Look at Maggie; not only did she marry well, but now she's also pregnant."
"Mom." Isabella said irritably, "Do you have to hurt me like this? Can you say a little less? I also want to marry a man like Fiorello, but I don't have that chance. I'm always unlucky, okay?"
Olivia waved her hand, saying impulsively, "Fine, I won't say anything anymore. You handle your own affairs. I won't interfere in the future."
Isabella, both angry and frustrated, dropped Olivia off at home. She didn't even go inside and drove off.
Unconsciously, Isabella drove to the apartment where she and James had lived as a married couple.
Since they started the divorce proceedings, Isabella had moved out.
By now, it was already dark. A fierce look flashed in Isabella's eyes as she called James. "I'm at the apartment entrance."
