Chapter 72 The Stirrings of Motherhood

Upon hearing the voice, Maggie pivoted, her hand raised in a farewell wave to Emily in the car. Due to the angle, all she could discern was the silhouette of Fiorello.

"See you tomorrow," Emily called out, her voice fading as she drove off into the distance.

"Let's go," Maggie said to Fiorello.

With a nod, Fiorello swung open the car door, his hand hovering protectively over her head as she slid into the vehicle. Once she was safely ensconced, he returned to his place behind the wheel.

"What are you in the mood for tonight?" Fiorello inquired, his eyes flicking to her in the rearview mirror.

"I need to stop by the hospital first," Maggie responded, her voice tinged with anticipation. "A colleague from the sales department gave birth today and asked me to be the godmother. I need to pick up a gift for my godson."

She recounted the experience of accompanying Ann to the hospital for the birth, her voice softening at the memory. "Newborns are so tiny. Their little hands and feet are just so endearing."

Fiorello, catching the wistful note in her voice, couldn't help but smirk. "When we have our own children in the future, they'll undoubtedly be the most adorable babies in the world."

Maggie was left momentarily speechless.

That hadn't been her intention.

Yet, Fiorello's words stirred a tiny flicker of hope within her.

Fiorello had good genes; their child would surely be beautiful.

Women are creatures of contradiction, always yearning for the most definite answers. Otherwise, all ambiguities remain just that - ambiguities.

They found themselves meandering through a mother and baby store. Maggie was on a mission to find two sets of clothes for the newborn, a task made challenging by her unfamiliarity with infant sizes.

She sought advice from the shop owner, who, upon seeing the pair together, mistakenly assumed Maggie was expecting.

The owner's eyes darted to Maggie's stomach, a knowing smile playing on her lips. "How far along are you? When's your due date? I can help you pick out clothes suitable for the season. Newborns have such delicate skin; they need the best quality."

Maggie blushed, glancing at Fiorello before correcting the owner, "I'm buying for a friend."

The owner laughed, realizing her mistake. "Is it a boy or a girl?"

"A boy," Maggie replied, "Could you help me with some recommendations?"

As Maggie chatted with the owner, Fiorello found himself drawn to the newborn clothes. He picked up a pink set, admiring its cuteness.

Seeing this, the owner chimed in, "Nowadays, children don't distinguish colors. Pink is also very nice. This set comes in several sizes. Why not take a set? It's pure cotton and reasonably priced at 30 dollars. If you buy more, there's a discount."

Maggie, too, found the clothes adorable. She turned to Fiorello, "Should we choose this one?"

"I'm just browsing," Fiorello responded, "I think blue or yellow would be more suitable for Ms. Smith's baby boy."

The owner quickly produced several alternatives in those colors. Fiorello selected with care, as if he were choosing for his own child.

Maggie watched from the sidelines, a smile tugging at her lips.

She could see that Fiorello had a soft spot for children.

Maggie was a novice when it came to shopping for children, so Fiorello ended up making all the decisions. They purchased two sets of clothes, a tambourine, and a set of talking rubber duck toys.

When it came time to pay, Maggie reached for her phone, declaring, "I'll handle this."

Fiorello didn't protest. The shop owner smiled knowingly, aware that only married men understood that they held no financial power; it all belonged to their wives.

After completing their purchases, they exited the store. Fiorello paused by the car door, scanning their surroundings with a sense of unease.

"What's wrong?" Maggie asked from inside the car.

"Nothing," Fiorello responded, finding nothing amiss. He slid into the car and started the engine.

No sooner had they pulled away than a man with a camera emerged from a car parked behind them.

This man was a private investigator, hired by Samwise.

He quickly sent the photos he'd just snapped to Samwise. Upon seeing the pair shopping in the mother and baby store, Samwise jumped to the conclusion that Maggie was pregnant.
