Chapter 223 Finding a Needle in a Haystack
When Maggie said this, Arya felt a chill down her spine.
"Mark wouldn't do that." Arya said, "You are Mark's daughter. Mark said he would prepare a house for you in London, give you shares in the company, and let you help manage the business. He wants to cultivate you."
To make Maggie believe, Arya showed Maggie the property certificate and share transfer agreement under the pillow.
Maggie looked at the silly Arya, not angry, just heartache.
Arya was so old but still being deceived by Mark.
The property certificate in Maggie's name was useless.
Maggie didn't invest; it was a gift from Mark, and he could take it back at any time.
As for the share transfer, it's just a blank check that can be taken back.
It's like making a profit without spending a dollar.
Maggie asked, "Mom, do you want me to be recognized and accepted by the Jackson family, officially becoming a member of the Jackson family?"
Arya hesitated and said, "Mark is your father; that's an undeniable fact. If Mark can truly repent and accept you, all my hard work over the years would be worth it."
Maggie understood that deep down, Arya had never let go of Mark and still held onto fantasies about him.
Decades of persistence wouldn't be easily let go.
"Mom, focus on healing your wounds first and also observe whether Mark has truly repented," Maggie suggested.
Maggie didn't believe that Mark would repent; she thought Arya was being used by Mark and Mark was just acting.
Maggie didn't want to say more to avoid hurting Arya.
Seeing Maggie's subdued reaction, Arya couldn't figure her out and didn't say much more.
After Arya finished eating, Maggie cleaned up the small table and brought hot water for Arya to wash her hands.
After finishing these tasks, Maggie poured water for Arya to drink. Arya, watching Maggie busy around, seemed to be deliberately finding things to do and said, "Maggie, do you have something on your mind?"
Arya understood her daughter well.
Maggie had been looking for an opportunity to ask Arya about the whereabouts of that child.
When Arya asked about it, Maggie sat down, looked at Arya nervously, and said, "Mom, there's something I want to ask you. I was going to wait until you were discharged from the hospital to talk about it."
Arya was puzzled. "What's the matter? Go ahead."
Maggie fixed her gaze on Arya and said firmly, "It's about that child."
Upon hearing this, Arya already had a rough idea in her mind and sat up straight. "What about the child? Is it Adalia?"
Arya deliberately asked like this.
Seeing that Arya still wanted to keep things under wraps, Maggie spoke up directly and bluntly, "I've spoken with Dulce. She's told me everything. Mom, I spent the whole night thinking about it. I don't blame you for losing the child. You raised me by yourself, and no one understands the struggles of a single mother better than you. You did it out of love for me, but I love my daughter, too."
As she spoke, Maggie's emotions rose; she seemed to cry, and she was very sad; even her voice choked up.
"Mom, can you tell me where my daughter is? Where did you leave her? Do you have a photo of the child for me to see?"
Maggie's daughter carried for ten months, hadn't even been seen yet.
Maggie had even forgotten over the years, not knowing how her daughter was doing now, whether anyone was taking care of her.
As Maggie spoke, Arya was already in tears, wiping her eyes, and said, "Maggie, I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
Maggie grabbed Arya's hand, tears streaming down her face as she shook her head. "Mom, I don't blame you. I just want to find my daughter now. Can you tell me where you left her? Michelle from The Angel Adoption Agency came to me. She said there was no record of that child. Where is my daughter?"
Arya now fully understood why Maggie knew about this.
Maggie hadn't regained her memory; Michelle had let it slip.
Arya, with a guilty conscience, wiped her tears and said, "Maggie, I don't know either. I left that child at the adoption agency's door back then, but when I asked Michelle, during that time at The Angel Adoption Agency, no girl was adopted. I don't know where the child is now."
Arya's words left Maggie feeling somewhat hopeless.
Even the last clue was gone.
Arya said, "Maybe someone picked her up. It was dark at the time, and the adoption agency's door was closed. It's possible that someone passing by took her. The child was beautiful and healthy. If she met a kind family, they would surely treat her well."
If someone picked her up, finding her would be extremely difficult and require a lot of time and effort.
