Chapter 226 Five Years Ago

Maggie sat in the lounge area of the Happy Pub, waiting for Fiorello. She took out her phone and checked the recent news about The Angel Adoption Agency.
Maggie hoped to find some clues about her daughter from these bits of information.
At that moment, two elegantly dressed women entered through the main door, chatting and laughing.
One of the curly-haired women caught a glimpse of Maggie in the lounge area and stopped in surprise.
The woman next to her asked, "What's wrong? Hurry up, or Mr. Clark will get impatient."
"It seems like I saw someone I know, but I'm not sure." The curly-haired woman stared in Maggie's direction, then said to her friend who entered with her, "Wait for me; I'll go take a look."
The curly-haired woman approached Maggie, carefully examined her, and asked uncertainly, "Are you... Maggie?"
Maggie on the sofa raised her head, looking at the curly-haired woman in confusion. "Do you know I?"
Maggie had no recollection of the woman in front of her.
Upon hearing that it was indeed Maggie, the curly-haired woman sat down with a smile. "It's me, Laura Simmons. Don't you remember me? It's been over five years since we last met. You still look young and beautiful, no change at all. However, I have aged quite a bit. You don't recognize me, do you?"
"Laura?" Maggie really couldn't recall having a friend named Laura.
Maggie observed Laura, a woman in her late twenties, who, despite the cold weather, wore a tight, sexy dress. She was heavily made up, exuding a strong perfume scent, and bore the unmistakable look of a Party Girl.
Laura chuckled and reminded. "Laura, you really don't remember? Five years ago, right here at Happy Pub, you helped me out. There was an oil tycoon from Houston, Mr. Wheeler, who insisted on making me drink. The drink was spiked, and you intervened to save me. I've always remembered your kindness."
If it weren't for such great kindness, Laura wouldn't have remembered Maggie all these years.
That oil tycoon from Houston was notorious for his lecherous and perverse behavior. Laura had been abused by Mr. Wheeler and nearly died. She was terrified of him very much.
During that time, Laura thought she was doomed, but Maggie stepped in to help her.
Maggie truly had no recollection. "I've really been here before?"
Laura noticed Maggie's unease and asked, puzzled, "Maggie, you really don't remember?"
Maggie shook her head and said half-truthfully, "I had a head injury a few years ago, so I don't remember some things. But when I came in just now and looked at the Happy Pub's entrance, it did seem familiar."
"No wonder. That night when Mr. Wheeler took you away, I searched for you all night. Later, I never saw you again, and I thought something had happened to you. These years, I've felt very guilty, but seeing you well now, I no longer have to worry." Laura explained.
Maggie's heart skipped a beat. She had drunk the spiked drink and been taken away by Mr. Wheeler five years ago. Putting all these pieces of information together, Maggie felt scared.
Could it be that the child was the result of Maggie's encounter with Mr. Wheeler?
Maggie pressed Laura. "What happened that night when Mr. Wheeler took me away?"
"I don't know about that." Laura hesitated. "You drank the drink that night, and Maggie, really, I'm very grateful to you. If you hadn't helped, I might have died long ago."
Upon hearing this, Maggie felt a heavy weight in her heart. "Laura, what's Mr. Wheeler's full name, and where does he live?"
"I'm not sure. The year following that incident, Mr. Wheeler's business went under, he declared bankruptcy, and he disappeared from our radar. We, the common people, aren't privy to such details. All we know is his last name is Wheeler, and anyone who walks into Happy Pub, we just address them as 'sir.'"
Laura's friend urged her. "Laura, hurry up, Mr. Clark is getting impatient."
"Coming." Laura raised her voice in response, then said to Maggie, "Let's exchange contact information. I'll treat you to a meal later to express my gratitude."
Maggie looked somewhat dazed as Laura mentioned the events involving Mr. Wheeler. The two exchanged WhatsApp contacts, and Laura left with her friend.
Maggie sat on the sofa, feeling troubled, and wiped her face. Suddenly, a deep voice sounded above her. "Excuse me, may I sit next to you?"
