Chapter 398 A Qualified Father
Fiorello looked at Adalia on the hospital bed and said, "That couple claimed Adalia's life is tied to their son's. If they kill her, their son comes back."
Maggie felt a mix of anger and fear. If they'd been any later, Adalia might've died.
Eleanor cursed, "They're monsters. How could they hurt such a sweet child?"
Joseph was furious too. "This is murder, Fiorello. We need to make sure they face justice."
Fiorello's eyes turned cold. "Attempted murder. They'll be in prison for decades."
He wouldn't let those who hurt Adalia go unpunished.
Adalia needed rest, so Eleanor and Joseph didn't disturb her. They stayed for a bit and then left.
As they were leaving, Eleanor reminded Fiorello, "Take good care of Maggie."
Fiorello walked them to the entrance. He didn't mention Gregory in front of Joseph, who felt guilty and only relaxed after leaving the hospital.
When Fiorello returned, Adalia was awake and crying softly from the pain. Seeing Fiorello, she cried louder, "Daddy, it hurts so much."
Her crying broke Maggie and Fiorello's hearts.
Fiorello gently took Adalia from Maggie and held her. "Adalia, don't cry. Crying makes it hurt more. It'll get better soon. How about a story?"
"I don't like stories," Adalia said weakly, clinging to Fiorello. "Just hold me, Daddy."
"Okay, sweetheart, I’ll hold you," Fiorello whispered, pacing the ward with her in his arms, his eyes never leaving her face.
Maggie was on the verge of tears. No parent could bear to see their child in pain.
They both wished they could take Adalia's pain away.
Once Adalia calmed down, Maggie fed her a bit of food and soup.
Fiorello couldn't bear to put her down. After eating, Adalia fell asleep in his arms, clinging to his clothes even in her sleep.
Fiorello held her, and when he got tired, he sat down still holding her.
Maggie whispered, "Maybe you should put her back on the bed."
Fiorello shook his head. "She just fell asleep. If she wakes up, the pain will keep her from sleeping again. I'll hold her. Maggie, you should rest."
"I can't sleep," Maggie said, sitting on the edge of the bed. "Adalia's lucky to have you."
Fiorello looked at Adalia sleeping on his shoulder, his expression softening. "I don't know why, but I just want to be good to her. Hearing her call me Daddy makes me happy."
Maggie understood that feeling all too well. She smiled softly, trying to lighten the moment. "Your biological son might get jealous in the future."
Fiorello chuckled. "If we have a son, we'll protect you. If we have a daughter, I'll protect all three of you."
Maggie laughed, knowing he meant it.
Then, thinking of Adalia's identity, Maggie hesitated and said, "Fiorello, I need to tell you something."
