Chapter 697 The Target of All
Vanessa instantly became the target of everyone's criticism.
Such a dramatic reversal made the group of wealthy ladies feel embarrassed.
They were all in their fifties and sixties, yet they had slandered a child. How could they save face?
Everyone was also afraid of offending the Flores family, so someone immediately stood up to condemn Vanessa: "Vanessa, what's wrong with you? You spilled the water and burned the little miss of the Flores family, and you still blame it on a child? You even deceived all of us."
Others chimed in, "Yeah, if you had told the truth, there wouldn't have been such a big misunderstanding. Seeing Grace so aggrieved just now was heartbreaking."
They had been calling her Adalia just a moment ago, but now they were calling her Grace. The change was swift.
Vanessa was overwhelmed with shame and anger, her face turning red: "I didn't do it on purpose, I didn't know."
Still trying to argue.
Maurice's face was grim. He glanced at Fiorello, who had remained silent, and understood what it meant. He had to give the Flores family an explanation.
His wife had slandered Fiorello's eldest daughter and burned his youngest daughter. This was unacceptable.
Maurice, in a fit of rage, slapped Vanessa hard. The slap was loud and forceful.
Vanessa's face stung from the slap, and she looked at Maurice in shock.
Maurice sternly reprimanded, "Hurry up and apologize to Mr. Flores. You're always causing trouble. If I had known, I wouldn't have brought you here."
This slap meant that Vanessa would never be able to hold her head high again. Her status in the social circle and her family had plummeted.
Vanessa, with tears streaming down her face, choked out an apology to Fiorello: "Mr. Flores, I'm sorry. I wronged Grace. I am deeply sorry."
Fiorello's tone was icy: "Adalia's last name is Flores. She is my daughter. No matter who it is, if anyone speaks out of turn again, don't blame me for being ruthless."
Who would dare say anything after that?
In the end, Vanessa and Maurice were too embarrassed to stay and left first.
This little episode did not affect the newborn party. Everyone understood and dared not underestimate Adalia, the illegitimate daughter.
Eleanor also realized how much Fiorello valued Adalia. Even without a blood relationship, Adalia's position in Fiorello's heart was unshakable.
Eleanor was puzzled. How could a biological child be less important than an outsider?
No matter how much one loves the house and its crow, one can't truly treat Adalia as their own.
Melissa also heard about what happened in the side hall. It seemed that the rift was indeed real.
Fiorello could silence the rumors, but he couldn't change people's hearts.
Fiorello's youngest daughter was still young. In a few years, when the three children had their thoughts, the Flores family would become even more lively.
Maggie also heard about Fiorello clearing Adalia's name and some of the gossip about Adalia.
There were some things Maggie couldn't change. She married into a wealthy family with an illegitimate daughter, and both she and Adalia were destined to endure public scrutiny.
She could bear it, but she worried about Adalia.
Because of what had just happened, Maggie didn't want to cause any more trouble. She asked Celine to take Adalia back to Sunset Hills first. She didn't want people to talk about Adalia's identity or her inability to speak.
The newborn party was about to start, and guests were arriving one after another. Ann and Emily also came.
Maggie hadn't seen these two in a long time, and her mindset had changed completely.
Ann spoke to Maggie with a bit of caution, unlike before, and didn't dare to mention that Maggie was her child's godmother.
She couldn't climb up to the Flores family.
Dulce, Ann, and Emily sat together. They had met before and had meals together, so it wasn't too awkward.
Maggie and Fiorello sat at the main table, and many people came to toast them.
Ann glanced over and said enviously, "Maggie had a baby, and her figure is still so good. After I had a baby, I gained a lot of weight around my waist."
Ann was only envious of Maggie's figure. As for marrying well, that was something she couldn't envy.
Dulce said, "I don't think you're fat now. Your waist is so slim."
"I spent a year losing weight," Ann recalled her weight loss journey and shook her head. "It was tough."
When women get together, they talk about cosmetics, fashion, and fitness. When men get together, they talk more about women.
Katie and Nate fell asleep after having their formula. After lunch, Maggie went to find Dulce.
She didn't see Mark and Arya, nor did she see Melissa.
Maggie went to the restroom, and just as she was about to come out of the stall, she heard Melissa's voice.
"The usual routine, mix the real with the fake. At such a low price, they still want genuine goods? How is that possible? Don't be afraid of being reported. Cheap goods are never good. Don't you understand that? Do as I say."
