Chapter 416 Hypocrisy
Kimberly used to always ignore Maggie, never showing her any kindness.
But today was different; she not only responded to Maggie but also showed concern.
Fiorello and Maggie exchanged a look, and Fiorello smiled, leading her to their seats.
Eleanor was thrilled and said, "I made fish just for Maggie. I'll go get it."
Holden sat across from Fiorello and joked, "Fiorello, you don't know, before you and Maggie came back, Grandma kept saying she wants a great-grandchild."
Kimberly, a bit embarrassed, lightly tapped Holden with her cane and glared. "Stop talking."
Holden laughed. "Fiorello, look, Grandma's embarrassed."
Kimberly glanced at Maggie's belly and asked, "When was your last check-up? What did the doctor say? Boy or girl?"
"Just had a check-up the day before yesterday, everything's normal," Maggie replied. "We didn't check the gender."
Fiorello added, "Boy or girl, it doesn't matter."
Kimberly nodded, not showing a preference this time. "Fiorello, this is your first child. Boy or girl, it doesn't matter. I'm just asking. As long as everything's normal. Maggie, eat up. Pregnant women can get low blood sugar, don't go hungry."
"Okay, thank you, Kimberly." Maggie felt relieved.
Maggie sensed Kimberly's change was due to family ties. Her stubbornness came from love, and letting go of prejudice was also out of love.
Eleanor came out with the fish. "Maggie, try it."
"Mom, only Maggie gets some?" Holden joked. "Looks like Fiorello and I aren't important."
Eleanor glared at Holden. "If you want fish, bring me a daughter-in-law."
Holden, holding a plate of salad, said, "Then I'll just eat salad."
Eleanor laughed and scolded, "Useless."
The meal was relaxed, and Maggie felt no psychological burden.
Maggie whispered to Fiorello, "Where's Joseph?"
Just then, Joseph's voice came from outside. "Fiorello, Maggie, you are here."
Joseph walked in with a bouquet, smiling, and went straight to Eleanor. "Honey, these are for you."
Eleanor's smile faded when Joseph appeared.
"Find a vase for them," Eleanor said coolly, not taking the flowers.
Since finding out Joseph had an illegitimate child, Eleanor had been cold towards him. Despite his efforts to mend things, nothing worked.
Eleanor didn't cry or make a fuss; she just ignored Joseph.
This hurt Joseph more than any scolding.
Joseph seemed used to it; a trace of disappointment crossed his face, and he just sat down to eat.
Kimberly glanced at Joseph. "Useless."
Joseph stayed silent.
Fiorello didn't say anything either, just focused on serving Maggie food.
The meal was still harmonious, and after dinner, Joseph continued trying to appease Eleanor.
Fiorello and Maggie sat in the living room watching TV. Fiorello peeled an apple for Maggie, cut it into pieces, and even shaped them like hearts.
Maggie smiled as she took it, and Holden said, "Fiorello, I'm stuffed, I can't eat any apples. I'll pass."
Fiorello said, "Go away."
Kimberly stood behind them, watching Fiorello take such good care of Maggie, feeling conflicted. She couldn't bear to watch, but thinking of Maggie's belly, Kimberly put on a smile and walked over. "Maggie, it's late, why don't you stay here tonight?"
Kimberly wasn't really concerned about Maggie's belly; it was all an act to make Fiorello and Maggie lower their guard.
In the past few months, Kimberly hadn't been idle. She hired a private detective and found evidence that Maggie had a lover. She was convinced the child in Maggie's belly wasn't a Flores.
