Chapter 781 Revealing Adalia's Background
Eleanor's words left Maggie feeling a bit disheartened.
She had always given in regarding Katie and Nate to consider Eleanor's feelings.
During the newborn party, when Eleanor criticized Adalia, she didn't make a fuss.
Eleanor demanded that Arya be disinfected before holding the baby and that Adalia couldn't be alone with her siblings. Despite these unreasonable demands, Maggie tolerated them for Fiorello's sake.
Now, hearing Eleanor's words, Maggie finally understood what Eleanor truly thought.
"Mom, in your eyes, am I just the mother of the children, a birthing tool, a company manager? You're afraid I have any selfish motives. Fiorello transferred everything to my name, and you're not happy about it. You don't like Adalia. You think I'm not fair enough." Maggie grew more agitated as she spoke, looking at Eleanor. "Mom, you weren't like this before. You used to like Adalia, and you were satisfied with me. Just because Adalia is my biological daughter and not Fiorello's, you're not satisfied anymore?"
This was the first time Maggie confronted Eleanor about these issues.
Maggie didn't want to feel wronged anymore and said, "Mom, you're Fiorello's mother. I know you're upset about what happened to him. I've been giving in everywhere. We're a family. Even if Fiorello doesn't come back, I still want to honor you on his behalf. But what about you?"
Eleanor remained silent, her face looking displeased.
Maggie mocked herself, "You don't think that way. You sent people to investigate Adalia's biological father. You asked my mom openly and secretly. You went to Happy Pub to inquire. Do you think I don't know all this? I know everything. I just pretended not to. I know your purpose. You want to send Adalia away, have her biological father take her, so she won't threaten Katie and Nate."
Maggie's words hit Eleanor's thoughts right on the mark, and Eleanor looked surprised.
She had indeed inquired secretly and wanted Adalia's biological father to take her away.
She thought Maggie didn't know, but Maggie knew everything.
The nanny, hearing the commotion at the door, quickly went to inform Joseph and Holden.
Upon learning that the two were arguing, Joseph and Holden hurried over.
As they walked, Joseph said, "I knew your mom had issues. It was bound to happen sooner or later."
"Why are Mom and Maggie arguing so early in the morning?"
They didn't know what was going on, but instinctively sided with Maggie.
They had noticed Eleanor's recent changes. Maggie had been enduring a lot. For her to finally lose her patience, Eleanor must have done or said something excessive.
Facing Maggie's accusations, Eleanor's face looked very unpleasant. "You're still young, you're beautiful, you have the means to find another man. Fiorello is gone. Can you guarantee you'll stay single for life? Can you guarantee you won't favor Adalia? Katie and Nate are Fiorello's children. As Fiorello's mother, is it wrong for me to protect their rights?"
"I can." Maggie's eyes and tone were firm. "I can guarantee I won't remarry in this life. I can also guarantee to treat all three children fairly, not shortchanging any of them, treating them equally."
"How can you treat them equally? Adalia isn't really Fiorello's daughter. She..."
"Adalia is Fiorello's biological daughter," Maggie said resolutely. "Adalia is the first daughter of Fiorello and me. From beginning to end, Fiorello is the only man I've been with."
Eleanor was stunned.
Joseph and Holden, who had just arrived, were also shocked.
This was simply unbelievable. How could Adalia be the biological daughter of Maggie and Fiorello?
No one could believe it. They even thought Maggie was making an excuse.
Eleanor, full of disappointment and anger, said, "Maggie, you can't just lie because Fiorello is gone. Wouldn't Fiorello know if Adalia was his daughter? How long have you known each other? How could you have such a big daughter? It's absurd."
To everyone, Maggie was lying, which was why Eleanor was so angry.
Holden, seeing the situation deteriorate, tried to mediate, "Maggie, Mom, stop arguing. Maggie, we're all family. Mom's been in a bad mood lately. Don't take it to heart. Let's not argue about this anymore."
Joseph tried to mediate.
Maggie looked at Eleanor and Joseph and said, "Dad, Mom, I only recently found out that Adalia is Fiorello's biological daughter. If you don't believe me, we can do a paternity test. Also, Holden should know about what happened at Happy Pub back then."
Holden was puzzled, "I know?"
