Chapter 187 An Eternal Slumber

Emily's blunt words hit Jenny's pride hard.
Jenny defended herself. "I heard that Maggie was hospitalized after a car accident. What's wrong with coming to see her?"
"If you're trying to steal Maggie's husband, then it concerns me," Emily reminded. "There are handsome men everywhere. As women, we must understand that single men can be pursued vigorously, but we cannot do that to married men. Got it?"
Jenny scowled. "I don't need you to tell me what to do."
Pushing Emily aside, Jenny walked towards the ward.
Maggie lay unconscious, and Fiorello gently and meticulously wiped her hands and neck with a warm towel.
Benjamin wanted to say something, but seeing Fiorello remain silent, he left in frustration.
Jenny could only stand at the door, peering through the glass window.
Seeing Fiorello's meticulous care for Maggie, Jenny felt a mix of envy and anger.
She wished the accident had taken Maggie away directly.
Suppressing her jealousy, Jenny pretended to be concerned and asked Holden, "Ms. Miller won't remain unconscious like this forever, right? She won't become a person in a persistent vegetative state, will she?"
"The doctors haven't mentioned when she might wake up. We can only leave it to fate," Holden replied, deeply worried. If Maggie kept a vegetative state, Fiorello would turn into a walking dead.
Jenny felt a sense of satisfaction watching Maggie on the hospital bed. As long as Maggie didn't wake up, she didn't believe Fiorello would remain faithful to that love forever.
After seeing Maggie, Jenny felt elated. She hoped Maggie would never wake up.
Fiorello wanted some peace, so Benjamin and the others left after a short while.
Maggie lay quietly in bed as Fiorello spoke to her. He believed that Maggie could hear him.
That night, Eleanor brought soup to the hospital. Seeing Fiorello talking to Maggie, she couldn't help but feel heartbroken.
Eleanor's eyes welled up with tears. After composing herself, she walked in.
"Fiorello, have some food. If Maggie wakes up and sees you like this, she won't even be able to recognize you," Eleanor said.
Fiorello cared about his appearance and wouldn't want to be seen unkempt.
His eyes were bloodshot, and he asked Eleanor, "Mom, do you think Maggie will wake up?"
"She will," Eleanor said firmly. "I believe that Maggie will wake up. Fiorello, it would help if you pulled yourself together. You haven't had a proper sleep in a long time. Let me stay here tonight and watch over Maggie. You go back, take a shower, change your clothes, and get some rest. Okay? You care for Maggie, and I care for you."
Fiorello, in a daze, replied, "Maggie wouldn't like me in this state. I'll go change my clothes."
He didn't want Maggie to see him looking disheveled.
With tears in her eyes, Eleanor said, "Yes, go take a shower. Now, have some soup first."
This time, Fiorello complied. After finishing the soup and saying something to Maggie, he left for Cityhomes West.
Holden drove him, chatting all the way while Fiorello remained silent.
Fiorello was truly exhausted; he hadn't slept properly for days.
As the car moved forward, Fiorello drifted off to sleep without realizing it.
Holden didn't wake him, letting him rest a little longer. He parked the car outside Cityhomes West.
Fiorello slept until dawn. If it weren't for his concern for Maggie, he could have slept longer.
He was utterly worn out.
Holden suggested, "Fiorello, why don't you go upstairs and sleep a bit more?"
"I'll go upstairs, take a quick shower, and come back down. I'll go to the hospital later. Maggie wouldn't be happy if she woke up and didn't see me," Fiorello replied.
Fiorello got out of the car and went upstairs. After showering, he watered the flowers and succulents on the balcony—things Maggie liked. Neglected for a few days, they were on the verge of wilting.
He needed to take care of them so they would look nice when Maggie returned home.
After finishing these tasks, it was already dawn.
When Fiorello had barely descended the stairs, he suddenly saw a small figure curling up there.
