Chapter 83 A Broken Promise

Maggie's breath hitched, her eyes riveted on the dart that had just been launched. The room fell into a tense silence as everyone watched the dart's trajectory.Lily's hand instinctively tightened into a fist, her heart pounding with anxiety. She feared the dart would find its mark. David, on the other hand, was radiating confidence. Yet, to everyone's astonishment, the dart missed the board entirely, landing with a soft thud on the floor. The unexpected turn of events left David and the others stunned. Maggie and Lily, however, quietly exhaled in relief."How is this possible? I never miss," David muttered, disbelief etching his features. He glanced around, but the wealthy spectators avoided his gaze."Mr. Quixote, you lost," Maggie declared, her voice steady. "A bet is a bet, and I am free to leave now. Ms. Cook, I await your message at your earliest convenience."Lily, taken aback by the dart game's outcome, remained silent, her mind whirling.David's face flushed with embarrassment and anger. "It doesn't count," he blurted out, "Let's do it again.""Mr. Quixote, a bet is a bet," Maggie reiterated, her tone firm. "You have a reputation to uphold in this circle."Maggie was confident that even if they played again, David would miss. She had secretly removed the magnet from behind the dartboard earlier. The magnet, she knew, was the reason David never missed. Lily had spotted someone discreetly placing it there earlier when no one was paying attention. It was a scheme to please wealthy people, especially David, who seemed to be the ring leader.David was left speechless, his humiliation palpable. He had never been so publicly embarrassed. Letting Maggie leave would tarnish his reputation among the elite. With this thought, David seized Maggie's hand. "There is no woman I can't have. Today, I want to taste a married woman," he declared, dragging Maggie towards a room. The spectators egged him on, their words fueling David's audacity. Ignoring Maggie's protests, he continued to pull her along."Mr. Quixote, let go of me. I'm calling the police," Maggie cried out, her initial confidence replaced by fear.Lily stepped forward, her voice shaking, "David, let her go. Is a woman like her worth going to jail for?"David issued a chilling threat, "Anyone who dares to send me to jail or speak of today's events, I'll kill them." With that, he shoved Maggie into a nearby room, slamming the door shut.Inside the room, Maggie was terrified, feeling utterly helpless. She cursed and kicked, struggling with all her might.David had intended to merely intimidate Maggie, but when her foot kicked his instep, he yelped in pain. He pinned Maggie to the sofa, threatening her, "Scream, scream as loud as you can. The louder you scream, the more excited I get."In her panic, Maggie grabbed an ashtray and smashed it onto David's head. Blood immediately began to flow, staining his hands as he clutched his head.Maggie dropped the ashtray and fled, leaving a fuming David behind. "Stop her, kill her," he roared, his anger now fully ignited. The sight of David's bleeding head horrified the onlookers more than his earlier nosebleed. This was serious; it could be fatal.David's bellow sent the spectators into action, quickly surrounding Maggie. She felt a wave of despair wash over her. To these people, she was nothing more than a plaything.Cornered and trembling, Maggie watched as David approached. "I've never been beaten twice by a woman. If I don't deal with you today, I'll eat my hat," he growled. As he spoke, David motioned to his cohorts who swiftly moved to apprehend Maggie. Just as she was about to be seized, a figure appeared from behind. Before she could identify the newcomer or see the attack, David was sent flying with a swift kick.
