Chapter 58 Adversity Reveals True Friendship

Often the most unsophisticated acts of revenge are the most heart-wrenching.

Holden had never seen Fiorello use such tactics. In the past, Fiorello would have disdained such underhanded moves.

"Who exactly is Samwise?" Holden inquired.

Fiorello's response was brief and to the point. "Your sister-in-law's ex-boyfriend."

Holden instantly grasped the situation, no wonder he sensed an aura of hostility.

Fiorello was at his computer, pulling up Samwise's information, and Holden peeked over. "Just a attorney, and you need to step in personally?"

With rapid keystrokes, Fiorello said, "The level of shamelessness is immeasurable."

He didn't care to concern himself with Samwise, but if Samwise was asking for trouble, Fiorello was ready to oblige.

Holden asked, "Fiorello, you were taken to the police station, and my sister-in-law... what should we do"

Thinking of Maggie, surely anxious by now, Fiorello replied, "I'll head back to Cityhomes West first and leave the rest to you."

Samwise owned a law firm while his family ran a factory that hadn't been turning a profit, suffering losses for years.

Samwise's father, driven by greed, had swapped materials, leading to a serious excess of toxic substances. If exposed, it would be the downfall of the Gamgee family.

Fiorello's intent was to utterly decimate Samwise and his family operations.

Handling the Gamgee family was simple for Fiorello. He didn't even need to get involved personally. Samwise had a shady past overseas, having taken bribes in a legal case and committing bribery himself among law enforcement.

Samwise's reputation abroad was tarnished, and that was the real reason he returned to the country.

Unable to make it abroad, he had returned home in hopes of success.

Fiorello thought of him as selfish, duplicitous, someone who would do anything to achieve his ends—an indicator that Maggie had been quite blind back in the day.

Eager to comfort Maggie, within an hour, Fiorello's Rolls Royce was parked in Cityhomes West.

Holden asked, "Fiorello, how long do you plan to keep this from my sister-in-law?"

Fiorello was at a loss for words, knowing that one lie had led to many, each spun to maintain the first.

"I've got it under control," he said, getting out of the car and heading towards the neighborhood.

Meanwhile, Maggie had just gotten home and went looking for Eleanor. Eleanor wasn't at home, and her phone went unanswered.

Unbeknownst to Maggie, Eleanor was completely preoccupied, engrossed in a game of poker with some buddies, oblivious to the crisis at hand.

Maggie, frantic with worry, was about to call Dulcinea for more information when she heard the sound of a key turning the lock. Her heart skipped a beat — the only people with keys were her and Fiorello, and Fiorello was supposed to be at the police station. Who could be entering?

As she pondered, the door opened. Maggie saw Fiorello step in. Her tense nerves snapped, and she couldn't hold back her emotions any longer. She rushed over and embraced him.

"You're back, I thought you'd be jailed. I've called so many times. I didn't know what to do or how to help you, Fiorello. I'm sorry, this is all my fault."

Maggie's tears fell unbidden. She was terrified.

She had lived more than two decades and never encountered such a complicated situation. Feeling utterly helpless for the duration of Fiorello's detainment by the police, she had contemplated many things.

If Fiorello really ended up in jail, she resolved to wait for him, no matter how long it took.

Seeing the girl in his arms crying so hard, Fiorello felt a mix of heartache and happiness — heartache for her tears but happy that she cared so deeply for him. He held her close and soothed her, stroking her back gently, "Don't cry now, everything's alright. Didn't I tell you I'd be right back?"

However, Maggie's emotions were not so easily calmed. Her tears and runny nose smeared on Fiorello's clothes, leaving him bemused.

"Okay, okay, everything's fine now," Fiorello said with a tender voice.

Maggie sniffled and slowly steadied her emotions before she realized she was still snuggled up against Fiorello, having smeared her runny nose and tears all over his clothes. She suddenly felt embarrassed.

She quickly moved out of his embrace, but Fiorello suddenly drew her close again, their bodies pressing tightly against each other. She looked up at him, not knowing what to do.

His deep eyes locked onto hers with a hoarse voice, "Maggie."
