Chapter 752 Cao's Literature
Imogen didn't care about Elara's expression and greeted her enthusiastically, "Elara, long time no see. You look younger and younger. It seems like not worrying about anything keeps you young. Look at me, I have to worry about Francis, and I'm aging fast. I've got crow's feet and even some gray hair."
The implication was that Elara didn't have a son and didn't need to worry about one.
Imogen's words made a lot of sense.
Elara was hit where it hurt, but couldn't say anything.
Imogen then handed a cake to Elara, "This is a little something from me. I came uninvited; I hope I'm not disturbing you."
"No, come in and have a seat," Elara said, feeling very angry inside but still smiling on the surface.
Elara wasn't one to be trifled with either. She smiled and replied, "We're all family, no need to be so formal. I was just thinking of having Wendy call you to join us for dinner. It's always lively with family around."
By saying "family," she implied that Wendy and Francis were a couple and that their families would eventually become one, essentially binding Wendy and Francis together.
On the surface, the two women appeared harmonious and enthusiastic, but underneath, they were cursing each other. Neither was easy to bully, and each sentence carried multiple meanings.
Francis could barely keep up with their conversation.
In the first round of conversation between Elara and Imogen, neither won; it was a draw.
Imogen entered the house, and Wendy, wearing an apron, came out of the kitchen, smiling and greeting, "Aunt Imogen is here. Francis, you all sit down; the food will be ready soon."
Wendy had cut ties with Imogen last time, but given the current situation, she couldn't ignore her. She had to be warm and welcoming.
Imogen smiled and praised, "Elara, you are really enjoying life. Such a capable daughter-in-law, so virtuous, not flashy, and filial to her in-laws. Women like her are hard to find."
Saying this, Imogen warmly took Wendy's hand, "Wendy, your husband has been gone for so many years. You should think about yourself. The child needs a father too, right? How about I introduce you to someone? There's a handsome young man in our village, tall and good-looking, with a farm of over twenty cows, and chickens, ducks, and pigs. He's about to get divorced and has a son. He'd be perfect for you. Once he's divorced, I'll introduce you two."
Imogen acted as a matchmaker, clearly indicating her disapproval of Wendy being with Francis.
This made everyone in the Holmes family look displeased.
Neil came out of his room just in time to hear this, looking upset.
Francis understood his mother's intentions and said to ease the atmosphere, "Mom, let's sit down and eat first."
"Alright, everyone, sit down. Elara, Neil, come and eat," Imogen said, not being polite, and then asked, "Hey, where's Brianna?"
Just then, Brianna came out of her room, happily calling out, "Francis."
Imogen quickly corrected her with a smile, "Brianna, you got it wrong. You should call him Uncle Francis."
The faces of the Holmes family members couldn't look any worse.
Francis didn't stop his mother and let her speak.
Imogen came today to warn the Holmes family not to think about marrying Wendy to her son.
A divorced woman like Wendy could only marry someone divorced with kids from the village.
Brianna, confused, said, "Francis said I could call him that."
"You can't call him that casually. Your Uncle Francis isn't married yet; how will he find a wife in the future?" Imogen said with a smile, handing some cash to Brianna, "Here, Brianna, happy birthday, and stay happy."
Imogen was very perceptive. Seeing the Holmes family upset, she handed some cash to Brianna.
Wendy said, "Aunt Imogen, we can't accept this. You should take the cash back. We shouldn't spoil the child too much."
Imogen replied with a hidden meaning, "Take it. Francis has given a lot over the years and raised Brianna well."
The implication was that Francis had spent a lot of money supporting the Holmes family over the years.
Whether it was Brianna or Elara, it was Francis who was supporting them.
Every word from Imogen was a hint, making the Holmes family feel very uncomfortable.
