Chapter 152 Strange Fiorello
Maggie was uncertain of how much Adalia had overheard. After gathering the laundry, she led the quiet girl to the bathroom for a bath. Adalia's injuries were healing, but she remained frail, her body struggling to regain its former weight.Adalia stood obediently under the shower's cascade, while Maggie gently washed her hair and face. "Girls should take care of themselves," she said, her voice warm and soothing. "Clean up, smell nice, and then you can sleep comfortably."Suddenly, Adalia's voice broke the tranquil atmosphere. "Aunt Maggie, do you not want me anymore?" As the words left her lips, tears welled up in her eyes. In Maggie's care, she had experienced a warmth that was entirely new to her.Maggie's heart clenched at the question. She quickly wrapped her arms around Adalia, hugging her close. "No, I won't abandon you. Don't think like that. Tomorrow, I'll talk to your mom and bring you to my house. I'll take you to school, where you can make many new friends, okay?"Adalia's eyes lit up with excitement. "Can I go to school?" She had always yearned to go to school, but her mother, Susan, had been unwilling to spend the money. Every time she passed the neighborhood kindergarten, she could only peek through the fence, watching children her age play and learn together. The sight always filled her with envy."Of course," Maggie replied, pinching Adalia's nose playfully. "Adalia, you need to study hard, go to college, and become a useful person in society.""Okay." Adalia nodded, her smile radiant as she hugged Maggie tightly. "Aunt Maggie, you're the best." In her heart, she wished that Maggie could be her mother."Adalia is the most well-behaved, smartest girl. I like you the most," Maggie praised sincerely. She didn't understand why, but she found herself drawn to Adalia, wanting to provide her with the best living and educational conditions. After helping Adalia bathe and tucking her into bed, Maggie gently closed the door behind her and left the room.In the living room, Arya was engrossed in a television show. Maggie approached her, saying, "Mom, it's getting late. You should go to your room and rest."Arya glanced at the clock. "It's already ten o'clock at night. Why hasn't Fiorello come back yet?" she asked. "Does Fiorello often come back this late?""Sometimes he works late due to overtime," Maggie explained with a smile. "He's a programmer, so it's normal to be busy. Go to sleep."The house had only three bedrooms, one of which had been converted into a study. Arya would have to share a room with Adalia.Arya sighed. "I heard what you said to Adalia just now. I don't know how to advise you.""Mom, money can be earned again, but growth and education only happen once. Adalia coming to me is my destiny," Maggie smiled. "If you feel sorry for me and Fiorello being tired, please help take care of Adalia more in the future to lighten our burden."Arya had already agreed in her heart, but she stubbornly said, "I won't help you. I want you to understand how hard it is to raise a child."Maggie knew that Arya was actually very soft-hearted. She sat beside Arya, holding her hand with a smile. "Mom, thank you for raising me.""No need to thank me." Arya's eyes filled with tears. She stood up and said, "I'm going to bed. Call Fiorello to see if he's off work, and there's food in the pot."Maggie smiled. "Okay."After Arya retreated to her room, Maggie finally took some time for herself. She went to the bathroom to freshen up and then climbed into bed. Glancing at the clock, she saw that it was almost eleven at night. She dialed Fiorello's number again, but his phone was switched off."What's going on?" Maggie wondered, her brow furrowing in concern. She sent another message to Fiorello, but still received no reply."Even if Fiorello is busy, he wouldn't ignore me." Maggie worried about Fiorello and thought for a long time before messaging Holden. "Can you contact Fiorello? His phone is off."
Maggie didn't want to do this, as she was worried Fiorello might think she was monitoring him. But it was late, he hadn't returned home, and she couldn't reach him. She felt very anxious.Holden, who had just finished his business engagement, received Maggie's message. Initially tired, he immediately became alert."Maggie, I'll help you."After replying to Maggie, Holden drove back to the Flores Manor."If Fiorello hasn't returned to Cityhomes West, he must have gone back to the Flores Manor."Upon returning home, Holden didn't see Fiorello and asked Eleanor, "Mom, have you seen Fiorello? Maggie said he hasn't come back yet."
