Chapter 485 Glance at Him
Nobody had the guts to answer Maggie.
After being cooped up for days, Maggie looked like a ghost—pale, worn out, lips cracked, hair a mess. She was just a shell of her former self.
Her eyes darted between Arya and Dulce, picking up on their silent worries.
She already knew the answer.
"He's still not awake, is he?" Her voice was so faint, it almost got lost in the breeze.
Adalia clung to Maggie's waist, her eyes red and teary. "Mom, I miss you. I'm scared."
These past few days had been a nightmare for Adalia. She was terrified Maggie wouldn't come back and that Fiorello might die.
Why did their once-happy family fall apart?
Adalia just couldn't wrap her head around it.
Her words broke Maggie's heart. She hugged Adalia tight, tears streaming down her face. "Adalia, I'm so sorry."
Adalia, who had been holding it together for days, finally let it all out, sobbing loudly. "Mom, don't leave me, Mom."
"I won't leave you, I'm so sorry, baby, I'm so sorry." Maggie held her even tighter, both of them crying their hearts out.
Arya and Dulce couldn't help but feel the sadness wash over them.
Dulce said, "Let's head back, Maggie. Get in the car."
Arya wiped her eyes and added, "Yeah, let's go home."
On the way back, Adalia clung to Maggie like a lifeline, scared she'd disappear again.
Adalia had always felt insecure.
Back at the apartment door, Maggie stepped inside, emotions swirling as she surveyed her longtime home.
It was like she had been Cinderella, living in a castle with her prince, but now the fairy tale was over, and this was her reality.
She and Fiorello were never from the same world.
Arya said, "Maggie, I'll run you a hot bath. You need to relax."
Dulce chimed in, "I got you some new clothes. Put them on and start fresh. Forget the past."
Adalia ran to her room and came back with a lollipop. "Mom, have this. Candy will make your heart feel sweet."
Maggie's heart had been bitter for too long. She unwrapped the candy and took a bite. "It really is sweet."
As soon as she got home, Arya and Dulce were all over her, worried about her emotional state, making sure she had everything she needed—hot water, hot meals, clean clothes, and a comfy bed.
While she was in the police station, Maggie had done a lot of thinking. Now that she was out, she was ready to start over. For Arya, for Adalia, and for Dulce, who had always been there for her, she had to pull herself together.
During dinner, Maggie said thoughtfully, "Mom, Dulce, Adalia, don't worry. From now on, I won't be the same Maggie as before. You don't need to worry about me. I'll get better."
Hearing this, Arya and Dulce felt a weight lift off their shoulders. Adalia beamed, "Mom, you're the best."
Maggie rarely smiled, but after this ordeal, she had become stronger. She saved her tears for the night and her smiles for those who cared about her.
In the dead of night, Maggie waited until Arya and the others were asleep before she changed clothes and quietly slipped out.
She couldn't stop worrying about Fiorello; she had to see him.
How could Arya and Dulce not know what Maggie was thinking?
When Maggie went out, Arya woke up, and Dulce's car was parked at the neighborhood entrance. When she saw Maggie come out, she waved. "Maggie, get in the car. I'll take you."
Seeing Dulce, Maggie felt a surge of gratitude. A good friend didn't need words; Dulce just got her.
Maggie got in the car and said, "All I want is a single look at him, just one look."
Dulce looked at her and said, "I get it. I've already asked around for you. Eleanor stays at the hospital every day, and after eleven, Holden takes over. I'll find a way to distract Holden, and you can go see Fiorello."
Maggie squeezed Dulce's hand and pressed her lips together. "Thank you."
"No need to thank me." Dulce smiled and started the car.
At the hospital, it was just past eleven-thirty. Eleanor had left, and Holden was on duty. Dulce went to distract Holden, and Maggie slipped in through another entrance, quietly sneaking into the ward.
