Chapter 279 The Distress Call
Summoning her courage, Maggie turned around and looked back, her eyes wide with fear.
The man in front of her was wearing a mask and a baseball cap, completely disguised, holding her keychain.
"You dropped your keychain." It was Farrell's voice.
Maggie snapped out of her fear and looked closely. "Farrell. It's really you."
Farrell let go of Maggie, avoiding her gaze and held out the keychain. "Here."
Maggie took the keychain, trying to control her panic, and asked coldly, "Why have you been following me? Have you been stalking me these past few days?"
Farrell couldn't meet Maggie's eyes and stammered, "No."
"Look at me when you speak." Maggie's voice was sharp with frustration. She'd been on edge for days, feeling like she was constantly being watched. "Farrell, what do you want? If you don't tell me the truth, I'm calling the police."
If Farrell had indeed been stalking her, Maggie would have been scared and would have had to report it to the police.
Maggie's words seemed to provoke Farrell, and his gaze turned vicious. "You were always mine. You are my woman. If I hadn't been late for that date, you would have chosen me and married me."
"You're talking nonsense." Maggie was bewildered and frightened by Farrell's intensity. "What date? What are you talking about? I have a husband. I don't know you well at all. I could never marry you."
"So, you're really a liar?" Farrell grabbed Maggie's wrist, his eyes dark and menacing. "You're just like the others, a scammer out to cheat people out of their money."
In Farrell's twisted understanding, Maggie's words meant she had been married all along, and the date was a scam she now refused to admit.
Maggie struggled. "Farrell, let go of me. If you don't, I'll scream and call the police."
Maggie figured Farrell must have been triggered, maybe by past bad experiences, and was projecting his anger onto her.
"You still won't admit it. All women are scammers. The prettier they are, the more they lie. You wanted to scam me that day, too. How much did Destiny pay you to hurt people like this?"
Farrell seemed to be in a delusional state, his thoughts and actions extremely paranoid and agitated. "How much do you want? I'll give it to you. Just be my wife."
"You're crazy." Maggie was both scared and disgusted. "Let go, Farrell, let go of me."
Unable to break free, Maggie kicked Farrell in the groin.
Farrell let go of Maggie in pain, clutching his groin and squatting down.
Maggie took the opportunity to run towards the Cityhomes West apartments. Farrell wanted to chase her but saw a patrolling SWAT car passing by and had to turn and quickly leave in another direction.
Maggie ran all the way home, her legs feeling weak. She grabbed some water, trying to calm down. Soon, there was a sudden knock at the door, making her jump. She feared Farrell had followed her.
"Mom, Mom, are you back?"
It was Adalia's voice outside the door.
Maggie breathed a sigh of relief and went to open the door.
Adalia and Eleanor were standing at the door, and Adalia exclaimed happily, "Mom!"
"Were you good at school today? What did the teacher teach?" Maggie asked with a smile, patting Adalia's head.
"I was very good. The teacher taught us how to draw. Mom, let me show you my drawing." Adalia eagerly pulled out a drawing from her backpack to show Maggie.
Maggie praised, "Wow, Adalia, that's amazing."
Eleanor noticed Maggie's pale face and asked, "Maggie, what's wrong? You look terrible."
"Something happened, but it’s fine now. Thank you for picking up Adalia. Have you had dinner?" Maggie replied.
Arya was still in London with Mark. If Maggie couldn't pick up Adalia, Eleanor would help, sometimes even taking her to stay at the house next door.
Eleanor said, "Yes, we ate at a restaurant."
Eleanor often took Adalia out to eat, and Adalia enjoyed going out with her.
"Eleanor, you've been so helpful these days. I feel bad."
Eleanor laughed. "There is no trouble. We're family. Adalia calls me Grandma. It's perfectly normal for a grandma to take care of her granddaughter."
Maggie smiled, feeling fortunate to have such a wonderful Eleanor.
"Eleanor, I..." Maggie started to speak, but her phone rang.
It was Isabella calling.
Curious why Isabella was calling at this time, Maggie answered. Isabella's voice came through, trembling and barely audible, "Maggie, help me."
