Chapter 59 The Backfiring Came Too Fast
Looking into his profound eyes, Maggie's heartbeat suddenly quickened—a fluttering feeling of heartfelt.
His arms wrapped around her waist, sending a current throughout her body.
His voice, hoarse and magnetic, carried a fatal enticement.
As he gazed at her reddened lips, Fiorello felt a tightness in his abdomen and bent down to capture her lips.
The kiss was intimate and breathtaking, rendering Maggie momentarily feeling lightheaded.
Fiorello had no intention of letting her go. He kissed her all the way to the living room couch, passionately covering her lips, her face, her neck...
As he deepened his advances, Fiorello began to lose control.
The taste of Maggie was just like in his dream—the woman in that dream had also driven him wild, and he couldn't distinguish if the dream was reality or not.
Maggie's mind stopped working as well, lost in the heated kiss and instinctively following Fiorello's lead.
Right when things were about to escalate further, Maggie’s phone rang. It was Eleanor calling.
She had finished her game and noticed several missed calls from Maggie, prompting her to quickly call back.
The abrupt ringtone jolted Maggie back to reality. She instinctively placed her hand against Fiorello's chest, gasping, "Wait..."
It was like being on the verge of hitting the freeway, only to be stopped abruptly—as if a bucket of cold water was thrown over them, extinguishing the fire within.
Fiorello also realized his frenzy in front of Maggie, something he seemed unable to control, which was incredible.
He let her go, and Maggie avoided Fiorello's gaze as she quickly answered the phone, "Aunt!"
"Maggie, is everything alright? I saw a few missed calls and hurried to call you back."
"It's nothing, Aunt. Everything's fine now."
Maggie glanced at Fiorello, who had already returned, and she didn't want to worry anyone, so she lied, "I was thinking of bringing some fruit over to you, knocked on the door and you weren't home, so I called to check."
"That so?" Eleanor was reassured and chuckled over the phone, "I'll be there soon."
"Great, aunt, be safe on the road."
After a brief chat, Maggie hung up the phone just as Fiorello stood up to leave.
"Fiorello," she called out to him, "where are you going?"
Fiorello gave a half-smile and said, "I'm going to take a shower."
Maggie lit a fire and naturally, he had to take a shower to cool down.
Understanding his meaning, Maggie's face immediately flushed with embarrassment.
Fiorello went to shower, and Maggie slapped her cheeks, feeling flustered by how wild Fiorello had been earlier. She nearly got swept away by him.
She too decided to wash her face to cool down a bit.
Fifteen minutes later, Fiorello emerged from the shower in a set of casual home wear.
Curled up on the couch, Maggie's heart raced as she watched him enter the room.
Fiorello's appearance was striking, and he looked good in anything he wore, exuding an air of restraint that was captivating.
Maggie asked, "Fiorello, how did you get back? I went to the station for your release, and they said it wasn't possible. How did they let you go?"
Fiorello responded with a mix of truth and fiction, "A distant cousin pulled some strings and sorted it out."
Shifting the focus to Holden spared Maggie any suspicion.
"We should really thank your cousin then," Maggie thought of the harsh words Samwise had expressed at the station and couldn't help worrying again, "Is everything truly settled? Did Samwise retract the charges?"
Fiorello nodded, "He retracted them."
"How could he suddenly drop the charges? Did he give you trouble? Did he ask for compensation?" Maggie was worried Fiorello might be at a disadvantage.
"No," Fiorello smiled and ruffled her hair, "It was my cousin who took care of it. I'm not too clear on the specifics. It's late now, are you going to rest or... continue what we started earlier?"
To prevent Maggie from asking any more questions, Fiorello intentionally scared her. As he spoke, he slowly moved closer to her...
"I'm going to rest," said Maggie, with her head lowered. "I have to report to the company tomorrow. Once this issue is resolved, we'll both be free. We should take your cousin out to dinner, to show our appreciation."
"Alright," Fiorello didn't keep teasing her. He knew Maggie was easily embarrassed.
With Fiorello's problem solved, Maggie felt relieved. She went back to her bedroom and made a quick call to Dulcinea to let her know everything was fine.
Dulcinea was never worried. She was sure Fiorello would be alright, but Samwise was really in for some trouble now.
Oblivious to the disaster looming over him, Samwise was scheming how to get back at Fiorello and make him spend more time at the detention center.
He'd never back down until Fiorello apologized to him on his knees.
Feeling cheerful and completely unaware of his impending doom, Samwise had just returned home when Andrew Gamgee saw his bruised face and asked, "Sam, what happened to your face?"
Sarah Walker, hearing the commotion, came out of a room and, seeing Samwise's injuries, asked with concern, "Who did this to you, Sam? How did you get so hurt? Tell me, who would dare to lay a hand on you?"
Before Samwise could answer, his phone rang. It was Jane.
"Samwise, your overseas bribery scandal has been leaked. The entire legal community is abuzz. You've been added to the lawyer's blacklist, and there's a very real chance your law license will be revoked. Also, our law firm is in trouble. The source of our registered capital is under investigation," Jane relayed the situation in an anxious voice over the phone.
As Samwise was still trying to process what Jane had told him, Andrew also received a call from the factory. "Mr. Gamgee, the inspectors have arrived. Our factory has been shut down. The incident with our raw materials containing excessive toxic substances has leaked somehow. Now, clients are canceling their orders and demanding triple damages. The tax authorities are also requesting an audit."
Hearing the news, Andrew's face turned pale, and his heart suddenly ached. With a hand clutching his chest, he fought through the pain and asked, "How could the audit department know? Such a big issue, why am I only being notified now?"
Everything happened so suddenly, and Andrew realized it was all falling apart.
The factory was already struggling, and in a risky move to save on costs, he had attempted a shortcut that ended up backfiring spectacularly.
"Mr. Gamgee, what should we do now?" The voice of his subordinate on the phone was riddled with uncertainty.
"I'll be there right away." Andrew hung up the phone, but before he could take two steps, a dizzy spell hit him, and he blacked out.
"Dad!" Samwise quickly caught Andrew.
Sarah was also startled by the sudden turn of events and went pale, "Andrew, please don't scare me."
Samwise pinched a pressure point on Andrew's body, and soon after, Andrew came to.
"Dad, what happened?"
"Sam, the factory is under investigation, the clients are cancelling their orders, and demanding a triple refund. It's all over for the Gamgees, Sam. Do you know anyone who can help? You're a lawyer, you know the legalities, what do we do now?"
Andrew looked at Samwise as if he was his lifeline.
Samwise was barely able to save himself now.
"Dad, the law firm's under investigation too," Samwise slumped onto the couch, defeated.
Andrew was frantic, "We can't pay this fine, not a dime. Who's out to destroy the Gamgees?"
This prompted Samwise to think - the simultaneous troubles at the factory and his law firm were no coincidence.
Who could be behind this sabotage?
Samwise's mind immediately went to Fiorello, but just as quickly, he dismissed the thought. Fiorello was still at the police station, just a working stiff - he couldn't have the means for such a scheme.
