Chapter 17 Just a Working Guy
Maggie didn't play coy. She understood what Jane was implying, so she went along with it and took the opportunity to discourage any thoughts Samwise might have had.
The candidness of Maggie left Dulcinea with no chance to intervene.
Samwise looked at Dulcinea, his gaze filled with questions—what was going on?
Before this, Dulcinea hadn't mentioned anything about Maggie's marriage.
Dulcinea felt helpless. After all, Maggie's elopement was news to her too, and as an outsider, it wasn't her place to say anything.
The people at the table exchanged glances. The atmosphere was somewhat awkward, all eyes on Samwise to see his reaction.
Samwise clenched his glass, feeling suddenly choked up, and took a big swig.
One classmate laughed to break the ice, "Mags, you got married and didn't even announce it in the group for a celebration drink? That's not cool. You think you're too good for us old classmates or what? We've been through school together. Just say the word, and we'd all show up, gifts in hand."
Those words were just empty courtesy.
Old classmates, who hadn't kept in touch since high school, would probably whisper behind her back if she sent them a wedding invitation now. They'd suspect she was just after the gift money, not the friendship.
That was the harsh reality of social niceties.
Moreover, Maggie wasn’t even in the class group chat. So, those words were clearly just to save face.
Maggie feigned consideration, "We just got our license and haven't had time to plan the wedding yet. Once we set a date, we definitely want to invite everyone to join us for a celebratory drink."
Maggie had no intention of hosting a wedding banquet. It was merely a polite way to shut down the conversation.
As expected, once Maggie said this, the mood on the classmate's face stiffened into a forced smile. Just to save face, he muttered, "Definitely, definitely. I'll be there, with a gift," and then fell silent.
Dulcinea had to suppress a laugh. This was the Maggie she knew, adept at shutting people up without making a fuss.
Then another classmate, with a hint of jealousy in her voice, said, "Mags, why didn't you bring your significant other along? Let us take a look at who's the man who managed to sweep our Mags off her feet."
Jane hadn't expected Maggie to get married, and when she heard the news, her wariness towards Maggie faded, and she looked at her with a touch of friendliness.
"Yeah, Maggie, you should call everyone up for a get-together. It's perfect since we're all here," Jane encouraged with a nudge. "Don't you all want to see what Maggie's husband looks like?"
"Of course, we do."
"Maggie, what does your husband do? My husband owns a fireworks factory. We should all hang out more often."
Maggie thought that mentioning her marriage would shut down the gossip, but it only seemed to invite more trouble.
She replied politely, "He works at Visionary Futures Group. He's been too busy lately, but I'll bring him to meet everyone next time."
When classmates would meet again was anybody's guess; Maggie's response was simply an excuse.
Upon hearing that the job was at Visionary Futures Group, Jane gave Samwise a glance. His face had turned a shade paler, but she smiled at Maggie and asked, "That's a big company. Which department does your husband work in?"
"Some of us applied to Visionary Futures Group after graduation, couldn't even get past the preliminary interviews, and were screened out."
"Visionary Futures Group has very high hiring standards, and the compensation is great. It's a leading firm. Countless graduates desperately want to get in."
"Maggie, your husband must be amazing to work at Visionary Futures Group. What degree does he have?"
Maggie wasn't quite sure herself. She only knew that Fiorello worked at Visionary Futures Group; she was in the dark about his position or department.
She said, "I haven't really asked about those things..."
"As husband and wife, how can you not know? Maggie, that's a bit disappointing. Are you afraid we'll ask your husband for favors or something?"
Some classmates said with a mocking tone, "Visionary Futures Group is impressive, but what does that have to do with Maggie's husband? He's not the CEO of Visionary Futures Group; he's just a minor employee. What are you all thinking?"
"An employee at a company, how much can their annual salary be? Besides, he's just a worker. Samwise has his own law firm.”
That remark seemed to wake quite a few people up.
Right, Maggie had only mentioned her husband worked at Visionary Futures Group. He could just be a minor employee.
Maggie's entire outfit cost less than fifty bucks, and her skincare choice was Maybelline—it was clear her life wasn't all that great, so her husband obviously couldn't be that remarkable.
Here, seated around her, were those who either owned their businesses or had married well, and even the guys casually pulled out keys to cars that were on par with BMWs.
The women sported LV handbags.
Thinking about how the once school beauty and top student wasn't doing well professionally or personally filled them with a sense of superiority.
Maggie, understanding their implications, said with neither humility nor arrogance, "Happiness isn't decided by money. As long as two people are united in purpose, the rest doesn't matter."
She just hated seeing these people look down on Fiorello, belittling him.
Noticing Maggie's irritation, someone let out a disdainful laugh, while another pretended not to hear and took a sip of their drink.
Poverty in a married couple is a source of endless sorrow, they thought. How can the quality of a marriage with or without money be the same?
"Maggie, don't be upset. We're just joking around," Jane said, placing her hand on Maggie's shoulder, playing the mediator.
Right at that moment, Maggie's phone rang—it was Fiorello calling.
Maggie saw the caller ID, but before she could react, Jane loudly said, "That's your husband calling, isn't it? Invite him to join us. Everyone here is waiting. We all want to meet the man who swept our Mags off her feet."
Maggie said, "He—"
However, Jane had already taken Maggie's phone and answered it with a smile, "Is this Maggie's husband? I'm her classmate. We're at MaSa. Maggie invited you to join, everyone's looking forward to seeing the guy who married our Mags."
