Chapter 167 Threat
Maggie was a woman of directness, particularly when it came to matters of the heart. She didn't dilly-dally or beat around the bush. After rejecting an admirer, another hopeful suitor approached her. Without hesitation, Maggie flashed the wedding ring adorning her finger. "I apologize, but I'm already married," she stated simply.
Her actions mirrored those of Fiorello, causing a ripple of surprise to spread through the crowd.
As Maggie's ring came into view, several faces shifted, their expressions morphing into shock. They exchanged bewildered glances. When Fiorello had displayed his ring earlier, they had been too distant to discern the details. However, they couldn't shake the feeling that Maggie's ring bore a striking resemblance to his. Their certainty wavered.
Emily, ever the diplomat, interjected with a smile. "Maggie, your honesty is refreshing. But gentlemen, I'm afraid she's off the market. However, if your lady friends ever require jewelry, Maggie would be more than happy to custom-design it. She's quite the talented jewelry designer." Emily's promotion of Maggie was both subtle and effective.
"That's unfortunate," a young man responded, disappointment lacing his words. "Should the need arise, Ms. Miller, I will certainly commission you for a piece."
The group of young men, their hopes dashed, retreated. Once they were out of earshot, they began to whisper amongst themselves.
"Did anyone get a good look at Mr. Flores's ring? Was it similar to Miss Miller's?" one asked.
"I couldn't quite make it out, but there seemed to be a resemblance," another responded.
"The designs of rings these days are so alike. Ms. Miller is Emily's guest; we might be overthinking this," a third reasoned."Perhaps. Mr. Flores did mention his wife prefers to avoid social events. It's unlikely he'd leave her to attend this party alone," the first man concluded. They decided to dismiss their suspicions and refocused their attention on the other eligible ladies in attendance.Emily's friends, however, couldn't resist teasing Maggie. "Ms. Miller, your actions are uncannily similar to Mr. Flores's," one remarked."Many married people these days pretend to be single and hide their wedding rings. It's rare to find people as dedicated as Ms. Miller and Mr. Flores," another added.Maggie responded with a light smile. "I believe that when two people are together, they should love openly, without anything to hide."A young lady chimed in, "I wholeheartedly agree with Miss Miller. We should openly admit it, even if we break up, we shouldn't be coy. We should all be honest in our relationships."
"That's right, there are plenty of men in the world, we can always find another one."
"I look down on those who are fickle."
Emily joked, "Of course, you change partners every month, never the same one twice."
"Emily, if you tease me again, I won't let you off!"
The group engaged in light-hearted banter, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Maggie was at ease, her demeanor carefree. However, the tranquility was abruptly shattered when her phone rang. Arya was on the other end, her voice laced with urgency. She informed Maggie that Isabella was in danger and James was threatening to commit suicide..Arya's frantic voice was underscored by the sound of wind, alarms, and Olivia's sobs. "Mom, send me the address. I'll be there immediately," Maggie responded, her tone steady despite the alarming news. After ending the call, Maggie turned to Emily. "I have an urgent situation at home. I need to leave." Emily, having overheard the conversation, urged her to leave quickly and stay safe.As Maggie hurriedly exited the party, Fiorello and Bart descended from the second floor. She hailed a cab and directed the driver to the location where Isabella was in peril.Upon arriving at Leyus Bridge, she was met with a chaotic scene. Police cars lined the bridge, and a crowd of onlookers gathered on either side. In the center of the bridge, James teetered on the edge of the railing, his demeanor frantic. Isabella stood a safe distance away, her expression unreadable. The police were attempting to coax James down, while Arya held a distraught Olivia back. James's parents were off to the side, their pleas for their son to reconsider his actions falling on deaf ears.Initially, James had intended to commit suicide with Isabella, but he seemed to have had a change of heart. Now, he was using his life as a bargaining chip, threatening to jump if Isabella insisted on a divorce. "If you go through with the divorce, I'll jump. I'm a failure. I've let you down, let my parents down. I'm not a worthy husband. I can't face you," he confessed, his voice choked with emotion.
