Chapter 488 Silently Standing By

Maggie shook her head, turning down Mark's offer to take over the Jackson Group.

"I want to carve my own path," she said. "If something isn't meant for me, it'll slip away no matter how tightly I hold on."

Just like her and Fiorello. They came from different worlds but tried to make it work, and look where that got them.

At the police station, she thought if she had a better background or stronger skills, Kimberly wouldn't have looked down on her, and today wouldn't have turned out like this. Social status really did matter.

Seeing Maggie's resolve, Mark didn't push further. "You've just come back, so take it easy. If you ever want to join the Jackson Group, the door's always open. The Jackson Group's got a lot going on, and I need to get back. If you need anything, just holler."

Maggie managed a small smile. "That's the nicest thing you've said in a while. I know what you're up to, but it still means a lot. Thanks. If I need anything, I'll let you know."

After everything, how could Maggie not see through Mark's intentions?

Fiorello divorced her out of necessity. As long as he didn't willingly abandon her and still had feelings, it could work in her favor.

If she took over the Jackson Group, Fiorello would naturally help her behind the scenes.

Maggie had to give Mark credit for his foresight.

Mark felt a bit awkward at her bluntness. He chuckled, "Maggie, I've been in business for years, and sometimes I can't help but think about benefits and risks. But no matter what, you're my daughter. I'm proud of you for sticking it out."

Mark sighed, "I've never really stood tall in my life. Always been a coward, relying on the White family, fearing them. Now, I'm not scared of anything. At worst, I'll risk it all. A person should live freely. If my daughter is so brave, what do I have to fear?"

Maggie's courage in facing Kimberly made Mark see her in a new light.

Maggie gave a self-deprecating smile. "If I could do it all over again, I'd be a coward too."

The price was too high.

Mark smiled. "Maggie, I can tell Fiorello still has feelings for you. Once this is over, you two can be together again."

Maggie shook her head, saying nothing.

She and Fiorello could only be strangers now.

There were two lives between them.

When Fiorello woke up at the hospital, it brought immense relief to the Flores family, allowing Eleanor and Joseph to finally relax.

Eleanor kept fussing, asking if he wanted to eat anything or if he felt uncomfortable.

Joseph was chatty, and Holden happily updated Fiorello on the company's affairs, telling him not to worry.

But Fiorello hadn't said a word since waking up. He just leaned against the headboard, staring out the window.

No one knew what he was thinking.

Seeing him like this, Eleanor teared up.

Joseph stopped talking, waved his hand, and said, "As long as you're awake, everything can be fixed. There's nothing we can't overcome. Your grandmother's funeral is next Friday. Don't forget what you promised."

With that, Joseph left.

Holden said, "Fiorello, Maggie left with nothing. She didn't take the house in Cityhomes West or the alimony."

Hearing this, Fiorello finally reacted, his eyes dimming. "That sounds like her."

His voice was hoarse and unclear from not speaking for so long.

Hearing him speak, Eleanor and Holden were thrilled.

Holden added, "Maggie moved back into her old rental apartment with Adalia."

"Okay." A deep pain flashed in Fiorello's eyes. Even in his coma, he had some awareness of the outside world. He knew Maggie had visited. "I want to be alone for a while. You guys can go."

Eleanor said, "Alright, I'll go home and make you some food and bring it over later."

Holden hesitated but said nothing and left with Eleanor.

Fiorello was left alone in the hospital room. After some time, the door to the ward opened again. Fiorello turned to look and was surprised to see who was standing there.
