Chapter 720 The Decisive Imogen
Mark's tone was full of impatience; his patience had worn thin.
People were selfish and tend to bully those who were kind.
Mark knew in his heart that Ashley still had feelings for him. No matter how much he argued, Ashley would still care about him.
Mark staggered upstairs, and Ashley could only wipe her tears and follow him to continue the argument.
Women were like that; they needed to argue until there's a resolution. The result Ashley wanted was for Mark to take a good look at her and live a life with her.
Mark shut the door, leaving Ashley outside. No matter how much she cursed or argued outside, he covered his head and went to sleep.
Arya had long seen through Mark's selfishness and had given up on him. She could lend a helping hand when Mark was in trouble, but that was it; she had no other illusions.
There were too many women like Ashley in this world, wanting to keep their men tightly in their grasp, to listen to them, to love them. If they didn't get what they wanted, they became hysterical and resentful.
So women shouldn't place all their hopes on men. The more expectations, the more disappointments. Once resentment sets in, life becomes unbearable.
Wendy was somewhat similar to Ashley.
After Francis was discharged from the hospital, Wendy followed him home to take care of him, trying to please him in every way, and insisted on staying over.
Francis, helpless, had to call Imogen Nelson to his house. With Imogen there, Wendy had no excuse to stay.
On the first day Imogen arrived, she saw through Wendy's intentions. On the surface, Imogen treated Wendy as Francis's benefactor's wife, but when night fell, she found an excuse to send Wendy off and spoke directly.
"Wendy, the Jackson family will never accept a daughter-in-law like you. You should give up on this idea as soon as possible."
Imogen was a decisive person.
Wendy was immediately at a loss, feeling embarrassed.
"Imogen, Francis and I," Wendy forced a smile and said, "we are together. Do you think there's something wrong with me? I can change."
Wendy thought that by saying this, Imogen would have to compromise.
But Imogen remained unmoved and said, "In this day and age, even cohabiting couples break up. I can tell my son doesn't like you. Let me be blunt: you're a divorced woman with a daughter, average-looking, with mediocre abilities. What makes you think you're a match for my son?"
Imogen's words were sharp and left no room for dignity, belittling Wendy completely.
But this was the real gap between Wendy and Francis.
Wendy's face turned red with shame and anger.
"Imogen," Wendy couldn't say a word, her eyes reddening, "I cook for Francis, take care of his daily needs. He's someone who doesn't take care of himself, often skips meals, has stomach problems, and doesn't know how to buy new clothes."
"Wendy," Imogen said calmly, "everything you mentioned, I, as his mother, can do, and so can a maid. My son is looking for a wife, not a maid, and certainly not another mother. Your Holmes family has relied on my son for so many years, isn't that enough? Do you want my son to dedicate the rest of his life to your Holmes family? That's too selfish, Wendy. Your Holmes family is too selfish."
Wendy's eyes reddened, "Imogen, all these years, it was Francis who took the initiative to take care of us. We never asked him for anything."
"Never asked?" Imogen exposed Wendy's thoughts with a cold laugh, "You treated my son like an ATM, thinking I wouldn't know? All the money my son earned over the years went to your family. Why don't you just name a price and buy him out once and for all? How much do you want for your Holmes family to stop clinging to my son for repayment?"
Wendy's face burned with humiliation, her hands clenched tightly, "Imogen, I said, I'm not in it for the money."
Imogen laughed, "You haven't taken my son's money all these years?"
"That money was..." Wendy was at a loss for words. She had indeed taken it, "I also contributed. It was mutual."
"Enough, stop with your schemes. You've taken the money and still want the man? Don't be too greedy." Imogen waved her hand, "Go back. If you think you can be my daughter-in-law, it's impossible. Even if my son stays single for the rest of his life, he won't marry a divorced woman like you."
