Chapter 389 The Wrong Kid
They was going to move tomorrow, so they had some packing to do.
Maggie told Arya, "Mom, since we have some free time, let's pack now and move everything together tomorrow."
The new house had everything, so they only needed to pack essentials.
Arya said, "Right, I almost forgot. You rest, I'll pack. Adalia, pack your own stuff."
Adalia nodded. "Okay, Grandma."
Maggie didn't rest either; she packed important items.
Adalia packed her favorite toys and clothes. While Arya and Maggie were busy, Emily sneaked into the kids' room and coaxed Adalia, "Wanna go play? I'll take you to the slide."
Kids love to play.
Emily's invite made Adalia think she wanted to be friends, so she nodded and said, "Okay, I'll tell Grandma and Mom."
"Mom and Grandma are busy. We'll just play for a bit and come back," Emily said, pulling Adalia. "Let's go."
Maggie and Arya were busy packing, thinking the kids were in the room, so they didn't notice.
Emily, though young, was cunning. She coaxed Adalia to go outside.
Adalia remembered Maggie's warning not to wander and shook her head. "Emily, let's just play here."
Emily put her hands on her hips and said, "You coward, I know a fun place. If you don't go, I won't be your friend anymore."
Adalia said, "Okay, but just for a while."
Emily often went out with Paul for work, and he had scared her with stories about kidnappers at the station. She took a hundred dollars she had stolen and hailed a cab to a crowded station.
It was getting dark.
Adalia had never been to such a crowded place. She felt scared and held onto Emily's clothes, "Emily, I'm scared. Let's go back."
Adalia, who had been beaten by Susan and developed autism, only became more cheerful with Maggie. She wasn't as savvy as Emily and felt afraid.
Seeing Adalia scared, Emily felt proud. "Coward, wait here. I'm going to buy something."
"Emily, I want to go too," Adalia said, not letting go.
"You wait here," Emily threatened with her fist.
Emily was known for fighting in the neighborhood, even boys were afraid of her.
Adalia stood still, not daring to move.
Emily walked a few steps, then stopped. She looked at Adalia's pretty dress and thought of the compliments. "I like your dress. Give it to me."
"No, Dad bought this for me, and I like it," Adalia said.
Emily threatened, "If you don't give it to me, I won't take you back. I'll let the bad guys catch you, and I'll tell Mom not to want you anymore."
Adalia, afraid of being abandoned, compromised. "Okay."
Emily took Adalia to the restroom, and they swapped clothes.
Emily wore Adalia's dress and looked at herself in the mirror. "I look much better in it than you."
The dress was custom-made for Adalia, so it was tight on Emily, but she didn't care.
Adalia didn't argue. After Emily showed off, she made an excuse and left.
Emily left Adalia at the station and took a cab back to Cityhomes West.
Thinking she was now the only child at home, Emily was very happy.
Emily got out of the cab and walked inside happily.
Meanwhile, Susan was hiding behind a tree near Maggie's apartment. She saw Emily walking over and tightened her grip on the sack in her hand.
Because it was dark, she couldn't see the face clearly but recognized the dress as the one Adalia had worn during the day.
Susan mistook Emily for Adalia.
