Chapter 617 Francis Felt Guilty
Francis, with his keen ears, heard it and said, "Aren't you girls all about gender equality?"
Dulce continued to drive silently.
As the car moved forward, Francis suddenly spoke, "How was your last date?"
"No good," Dulce shrugged and said, "The guy was too indecisive."
Francis raised an eyebrow, "Didn't you say you wouldn't consider men over twenty-two?"
"Sometimes, you have to be flexible," Dulce chuckled dryly, "It's almost New Year's, and there are a lot of people scheduling dates. I can take my time to choose."
"Is there anyone you like?"
"Not exactly," Dulce said, "There's one with good conditions, young, just turned twenty-two, just graduated, has two houses, owns a jewelry store, his parents are business people, and he's an only child. My mom says marrying him would mean a life of comfort."
Francis asked, "When's the date?"
"In a few days. The guy is abroad right now and will be back in a few days."
"You're quite busy then."
"Francis, it's almost New Year's. Isn't your family setting you up on dates?" Dulce asked casually, "You're at that age where you should consider personal matters."
"I don't like dating," Francis said, "Living together isn't a business transaction based on material conditions. It requires fate and mutual affection."
Was Francis implying that she was too materialistic?
Dulce chose to remain silent.
The car soon arrived at Francis's apartment. Just as he was about to say something, Dulce said, "Francis, Wendy is here."
At the apartment entrance, Wendy was holding a little girl, looking in Francis's direction.
The girl was Wendy's daughter, Brianna.
Francis frowned, got out of the car, and said to Dulce, "Drive safely."
"Bye," Dulce turned the car around and left.
Francis walked towards Wendy. Wendy signaled her daughter Brianna to greet him, and Brianna sweetly called out, "Francis."
"Good girl, Brianna," Francis patted Brianna's head and greeted Wendy, "Do you need something?"
"Brianna hasn't seen you in a long time and missed you, so I brought her over," Wendy used her child as an excuse, "You haven't eaten yet, right? I bought some groceries."
Out of guilt for his deceased comrade, Francis had always taken good care of Wendy and her daughter, often giving them money and fulfilling Brianna's every request.
Brianna's parent-teacher meetings often saw Francis playing the role of her father.
To prevent Brianna from feeling envious of her classmates who had fathers, Francis never refused to attend whenever he could.
Back home, Wendy went to the kitchen to cook while Francis stayed in the living room helping Brianna with her homework.
Whenever Brianna had a question, she would ask, and the two got along harmoniously, just like a father and daughter.
Wendy stood at the kitchen door, looking at the two in the living room. The warm scene filled her with joy. Over the years, Francis's care for her and her daughter had made her fall for him.
Knowing that Francis was close to Dulce, Wendy frequently brought Brianna to appear in front of Francis.
In Wendy's mind, they were a family of three, and no one could come between them.
Wendy returned to the kitchen and finished cooking, "Francis, Brianna, dinner's ready."
Brianna packed up her homework, "It smells so good. Mom's cooking is the best. Francis, don't you think so?"
Francis smiled, "Yes."
Brianna's childish voice asked, "Francis, how about Mom cooks for you every day from now on? I want Francis to eat with us every day. We can be a family forever, and Francis can be my dad. That way, I won't be jealous of my classmates who have dads. Is that okay?"
Francis immediately looked at Wendy, who blushed, clearly sharing the sentiment.
It was only then that Francis realized Wendy had feelings for him.
Wendy, shyly lowering her head, pretended to scold her daughter, "Brianna, eat your food and don't talk nonsense."
"I want Francis to be my dad," Brianna pouted, looking pitiful, "All my classmates have dads. Why don't I have a dad? Where did my dad go? My classmates all say I don't have a dad."
These words made Francis feel even more guilty. Brianna's biological father, Edward, had sacrificed his life to save him.
Brianna not having a father was his fault.
Wendy's eyes reddened with tears, showing a heartbroken expression for her daughter, "Brianna, it's Mom's fault for not giving you a complete family. I'm sorry."
Francis frowned, guilt and self-blame filling his chest.
