Chapter 1016 Breaking the Engagement
"What's wrong?" Richard keenly noticed Jane's unusual behavior. He asked while turning his head, locking eyes with Anthony.
Richard had already noticed someone watching him, but with bodyguards around, he felt safe and didn't pay much attention.
He hadn't expected that it might not be about killing, but about kidnapping.
As this thought crossed his mind, Richard looked back at Jane and joked at his own expense. 'This little girl isn't mine anyway.'
Jane averted her gaze, pretending she hadn't seen anything, and continued chatting with Richard for a while.
Not knowing what to talk about, it was Richard who brought up a topic, asking Jane if she had prepared a gift for her newly born godson.
"Not yet," Jane said, feeling a bit embarrassed. She hadn't had the time to prepare it.
Jane had originally planned to prepare something a month before Natalie's due date, but she had been stuck at the Clark family for so long that she hadn't had the time or the mindset to prepare.
"Mr. Foster, do you have any good suggestions?" Jane suddenly remembered that Richard had many nieces and nephews, even if they were distant relatives.
'When a child is born, a gift is necessary for Richard,' Jane thought.
Richard seemed to see through her mind and smiled helplessly, "I don't have much experience in this matter. It is always my secretary who prepares the gifts. However, it's not advisable to give food or personal items to a baby."
Jane listened to Richard's words and thought for a moment.
She quickly understood the last piece of advice.
"When it comes to baby food and personal items, fastidious families usually have everything planned out in advance, including the brand and material. If you have a good relationship with them, food and daily necessities don't really count as gifts. At best, they're just something you pick up along the way. If the relationship isn't good, it might be seen as presumptuous, and they might not even trust using them. If something goes wrong, it could cause a lot of trouble," Richard explained further.
Jane pondered what she could give and gradually became a bit distracted. When she snapped back to reality, she realized her attention was drifting towards Anthony.
Jane didn't want to look up at Anthony but was curious if he was still there.
"Mr. Foster, I think I'll head back to my room to pack up," Jane said, feeling restless. "See you tomorrow?"
"Alright."
Richard didn't say much and didn't ask anything about Anthony.
Jane glanced up and saw that Anthony was no longer at the door. She breathed a sigh of relief.
When she left Paykston for the Clark family, she had packed in a hurry and had very little luggage.
During this time, she had bought consumables as needed, so there wasn't much to pack.
Jane sent her flight number to Natalie and typed: [Arriving tomorrow! Big baby and little baby, I'm coming back!]
Natalie: [Nathan Windsor, your little baby's name.]
"Nathan Windsor..." Jane murmured a few times, finding the name increasingly pleasant and refined.
An idea flashed through her mind.
Jane thought that she could give an inkwell as gift.
Fae City had always been known for scholars, and its inkwell was well-made. Although it was used much nowadays, a birth gift didn't have to be practical. It just needed to have good symbolism.
And the Windsor family didn't lack practical items.
Even if Nathan wasn't the little girl Oliver had hoped for, he wouldn't be treated any less.
Jane quickly packed her luggage. The clothes she had bought over the past few days couldn't fit in her small suitcase, so she arranged for the hotel to send them directly to her home by courier. With that done, she went out to buy an inkwell.
There was no need to inform Richard. He had already assigned four bodyguards to Jane, so she could move around freely.
The most famous inkwell wasn't actually in Fae City, but Fae City was wealthy and there were many masters, so there were plenty of high-quality inkwells available.
Jane asked a well-connected friend in Fae City where to find good inkwells. Later she got an address and took a cab there.
"Miss, there's a Porsche following us. Do you know it?" the cab driver asked, glancing suspiciously at the rearview mirror.
Jane turned to look and saw Anthony in the driver's seat, expressionless, following the cab.
"I know him, but not well," Jane said. "He's my ex-boyfriend."
The cab driver was quick to catch on. "A clingy ex-boyfriend? That car looks like it's driven by a rich guy with nothing better to do. It's good for you to breake up with him!"
Jane smiled and agreed.
The cab driver kept talking. "Nowadays, some young women just want to find rich guys, not caring about feelings or even a proper relationship. It's good that you have a clear mind! You also can be happy with less money."
Jane was puzzled and thought, 'Do I really look like someone without money?'
She glanced at her outfit and thought, 'Okay, it is all custom-made from private studios without any luxury brand logos, so it is easy for ordinary people to mistake it for unbranded items.'
Her phone vibrated with an incoming call.
It was the friend she had asked about the inkwell.
"Hello."
After some small talk, the friend got to the point. "Jane, I want to ask you something!"
"Go ahead."
"Did Anthony break off his engagement with Aurora because of you?"
"Broke off the engagement?"
Jane was stunned and thought, 'The baby has been born safely. How could they break off the engagement?'
"What, you didn't know?" The friend was shocked. "Everyone in the circle knows. You didn't know? Aren't you staying at the Clark family? "
It was an open secret that Jane had stayed with the Clark family during Aurora's pregnancy. Many people knew, except for someone like Natalie, who didn't care about such things and was focused on her pregnancy. No one dared to bring it up to her.
Jane and Anthony's past wasn't a secret, so many people said Jane was trying to be his mistress and take Aurora's place. Of course, no one thought Jane would succeed. After all, Aurora was Anthony's fiancée, and she was pregnant.
But now, the engagement was actually called off.
"I left the Clark family days ago. I only found it when you mentioned it." It had been almost a week since Aurora gave birth. Jane had been in Fae City for nearly a week, but her whereabouts were kept secret.
Jane said, "It has nothing to do with me. I have no relationship with Anthony. I chose to stay at the Clark family for my brother."
Those who knew Jane well knew that Jovan was her Jane' heel that couldn't be used. The friend didn't ask further.
