Chapter 1027 Jane, I'm Pursuing You Again
Dinner was something other than what Jane and Anthony needed to worry about. There was a chef at the mansion's property management center. Unless the guests had special requests, the chef's signature dishes would be delivered.
After dinner, Anthony sat in his wheelchair, handling his work.
Jane received a call from Paykston.
"Is this Ms. Watkins? This is the security office of Emerald Apartments."
Emerald Apartments was the name of Jane's apartment complex in Paykston.
Jane replied, "Yes."
"Ms. Watkins, we received a package for you, but your apartment had a break-in and murder three months ago. Are you sure you still want to live there? If you do, we can provide cleaning services for the apartment, but there will be an additional charge."
"Wait, a murder?" Jane was completely stunned.
"You didn't know?" The security officer was also surprised.
"I know now after you said," Jane said.
"I see," the security officer said awkwardly. "We're very sorry, Ms. Watkins. It is our oversight. When the incident happened, we tried to contact you but couldn't reach you. Later, a man who claimed to be your boyfriend handled the aftermath and compensated the victim's family. We thought you were too scared to deal with it yourself and had your boyfriend do it. We're really sorry for our negligence!"
'It is not the time to assign blame,' Jane thought.
Jane was confused. "Who was the victim, why were they in my home, who was the murderer, why did they target my home, how did the murderer get past your security, and who was the person who claimed to be my boyfriend?"
"Do you have many boyfriends?" The security guard's thought process was peculiar. "He was quite tall and handsome, but he looked like he had a bad temper, driving a silver Hummer."
The security guard continued, "The victim was a housekeeper you had called to your home. She was out of luck because she was late that day. When she arrived at your house in the evening, she just happened to encounter the intruder. The intruder confessed that he intended to steal money and killed her in a moment of panic when she discovered him."
That explanation was completely unconvincing.
There were many wealthy people in Emerald Apartments, and many of them kept mistresses who lived alone and loved to flaunt their wealth. None of them had been targeted, but Jane had.
After hanging up the phone, Jane thought carefully about the situation and quickly found a clue.
She had been targeted several times recently. Maybe those people had initially planned to start with her apartment in Paykston.
Jane had left Paykston in a hurry, and very few people knew. Maybe she had escaped that time by sheer luck.
But that innocent housekeeper had died tragically.
When Jane returned to the living room, Anthony's gaze shifted from his computer to her.
"Jane, I want to take a bath."
Jane's mind was still on the security guard's words. When she saw Anthony, she immediately associated him with the man the guard had described.
"You can't take a bath right now." Jane snapped back to reality.
"I want to take a bath." Anthony, though rough around the edges, had always been very particular about cleanliness, a trait befitting his wealthy upbringing.
Jane smiled, "You can imagine. No one's stopping you from imaging."
When the property management center delivered dinner, they also brought fresh-cut fruit and yogurt. Jane took a glass bowl, picked out her favorite fruits, opened the yogurt lid, poured it in, eating slowly on the sofa.
"Jane, can I pursue you again?" Anthony suddenly asked.
After the conversation earlier in the day, Anthony's didn't shock Jane as much.
Jane looked up calmly. She found Anthony's use of "again" interesting, as if he had pursued her before.
In the past, it was clearly Jane who had been chasing after Anthony. But Jane wouldn't say that out loud to avoid embarrassing herself.
"Just to take a bath, you're willing to say you want to pursue me?" Jane chewed on a mango and wondered, "Where's Mr. Clark's ambition and pride?"
"Jane, stop playing dumb with me." Anthony wasn't buying it. His gaze was filled with aggression and determination as if he were looking at a prey he was determined to capture.
"I want you," he continued.
Anthony thought, 'I pursue you because I want to become your boyfriend; I want you to marry me, to become my woman, my wife."
Jane quietly looked at Anthony, neither of them speaking.
The large mansion fell into silence, only their breathing audible.
It was like a silent battle slowly unfolding between Jane and Anthony.
Neither would back down.
Finally, Jane's laughter broke the stalemate."So, Mr. Clark handled the break-in and murder at my apartment as my fiancé?"
Anthony was momentarily stunned but didn't deny it. He asked, "When did you find out?"
'So Anthony is admitting he was that guy,' Jane thought.
"How much did you compensate the victim's family? I'll transfer the money to you." Jane took out her phone, ready to make the transfer.
Anthony looked at Jane but said nothing.
He wouldn't tell Jane how much he had paid to quell the incident in the big city; even Natalie and Flora hadn't heard about it.
"Anthony Clark!"Jane's suppressed emotions suddenly erupted. "Anthony Clark, who gave you the right to make decisions for me? What do you take me for? The security office said they tried to call me, but I didn't get the call. Did you intercept it? When you didn't want me, you threw me out like a stray dog or cat, ignoring all my pleas. Now you want to pick me up again, so you interfere in my affairs randomly and make decisions for me?"
"I didn't, "Anthony wanted to say it, but couldn't bring himself to say it out loud.
Anthony had never thought of Jane as a stray. She was an inseparable part of his soul, but everything else she said was true.
Back then, Anthony had urgently removed Jane from his life because he was afraid he couldn't get over her.
Now, he was urgently trying to bring Jane back into his life because he was afraid someone else would take her.
Emotions came quickly and faded just as fast. Jane soon calmed down, realizing that her outburst was somewhat inexplicable, more like a vent for old grievances.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to lose my temper." Jane rubbed her temples, no longer angry at Anthony, who had saved her.
Anthony suddenly said, "This time, if I pick you up this time, I won't let you go again."
In fact, Anthony had never intended to let Jane go.
"Really?" Jane calmed down, letting out a cold laugh as if to say, "You probably can't pick me up again."
