Chapter 699 Oliver's Wicked Sense of Humor
"And it seems the author is one of your fans," Oliver smirked, angling his face and planting a kiss on Natalie's flushed cheek before adding, "Shouldn't you fulfill your fan's request?"
"That's nonsense! When did they ever make such a request? It's just people's wild imaginations!" Natalie retorted quickly.
"Then how about Mrs. Windsor fulfills her husband's wish?" he teased.
"Since when did you become so wickedly humorous!" Natalie glared at him.
Oliver simply replied as if it were a given, "I was never a saint to begin with."
As soon as Oliver and Natalie left the scene, the young elite there erupted into chaos, swarming around Mia.
"Mia, you've got some nerve, openly being a fan of Mr. Windsor and Natalie's couple," someone couldn't help but exclaim.
Mia felt like crying but had no tears, "Who would want to be so brazen if they had the choice?"
She still had no idea how she accidentally revealed her online alias!
Even a well-known socialite secretly asked Mia if there was a fan group for celebrity couples, saying, "I won't lie to you, I'd really like to follow this couple, Oliver and Natalie, but up till now, I haven't been brave, enough. Seeing you're doing just fine today, ha! Would you include me in your group?"
Mia wanted to tell the socialite that she was hanging by a thread, but the desire to grow her fan group of the couple was too strong, and ultimately... she quietly passed on the group's contact card.
Ha! Look how good her taste is; she's shipping a celestial couple!
The party was a complete success with everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves.
People realized that Natalie was a true gem, seemingly unflappable, a trait last seen in the once top socialite. Mia, who, it seemed, still handled everything with the same ease.
Dinner was a seafood buffet prepared by the estate, and after eating, everyone wanted to go karaoke with Natalie.
Oliver watched the group with an unreadable expression. Why don't they get it? Can't they see he doesn't want Natalie to keep hanging out with them?
Oliver had Barrett set up this gathering mainly to demonstrate Natalie's importance to him so that some of his peers wouldn't give her a hard time when he wasn't around. Since he had achieved his goal, he didn't want to continue the party.
He was looking forward to trying out a scene from one of Mia's fanfiction stories.
Unexpectedly for Oliver, his plan worked too well and now everyone knew that Natalie was Mr. Windsor's favorite.
With Natalie around, there was no need for pretense! Oliver's thoughts were interrupted by his vibrating phone.
Whatever was said on the other end, Natalie noticed Oliver's expression instantly stiffened as if he had received unbelievable news, his mood turning dark and unclear.
His usually deep eyes seemed fogged over, making it even harder to guess what he was thinking.
Even so, at that moment, everyone sensed the change in Oliver's aura.
The room fell silent, all eyes turning to Oliver.
"Something came up, we need to leave," Oliver said without further explanation, nodding to everyone as he took Natalie's hand and exited.
"Ah... sure, sure, Mr. Windsor, you're busy."
"Bye Mr. Windsor, Natalie!"
"Let's hang out again next time, see you!"
A group of people were confuse about the situation, but it didn't stop them from bidding farewell in a sensible manner.
The estate quickly arranged transportation for Oliver and Natalie to leave.
Those slightly acquainted with Oliver noticed something odd. He was always fastidious and would not typically ride in a hotel shuttle unless truly necessary, preferring to wait for his own car. Usually, he detested the smell of other people's leather car seats.
After the couple had left, a circle of acquaintances began to gossip:
"Mr. Windsor sure left in a hurry. Did something happen at the company?"
"I doubt it, Mr. Windsor is a business prodigy. What kind of business trouble could possibly ruffle his feathers? Doesn’t seem likely."
"Ah, what a shame. I wanted to hear Natalie sing. They say she can play guitar and sing at the same time. That must be so cool!"
"Truth be told, I used to look down on Natalie a bit because of her background… and then she married Mr. Windsor. But after today, I realized I have no right to judge her at all."
Several people nodded in agreement.
Although Natalie's background wasn't as prestigious as theirs, her husband's status was something they might never achieve in their lifetimes.
If a good family background was a talent, then marrying into one was also a talent.
To make matters clear, Oliver's behavior today was obviously in support of Natalie. If any of the others had any objections to her, they had to keep it to themselves and not let it become known. Otherwise, they would end up like Miss Nora as a cautionary tale.
Barrett, completely bored with playing with his phone, suddenly received a message from his elder brother who held sway over their family affairs. He froze, staring in the direction where Oliver and Natalie had departed.
The message read…
Older brother: [Henry just passed away, tread carefully.]
The car drove out of the estate, speeding towards the interstate highway.
"Oliver, where are we going? What happened?" Natalie's voice quivered with unease.
Oliver, though appearing undisturbed and calm as usual, was gripping her hand much more tightly than normal.
"To the Windsor family’s old mansion," Oliver paused, gazing out the window, after a long silence he added, "Henry is dead."
Henry's passing wasn't sudden.
Ever since Victoria and Edwin passed away, and Henry lost his legal battle against Oliver, coupled with the mental anguish and physical torture of life imprisonment, Henry's health had deteriorated significantly.
Henry was not entirely without foresight; he had hired a personal lawyer long ago. When his health weakened, he applied for house arrest on the grounds of a serious illness.
His health declined swiftly, but then recovery was a slow and grueling process. However, before he could fully recover, Henry died suddenly in the middle of the night from a cerebral hemorrhage.
Natalie and Oliver encountered a late-night traffic jam, and by the time they reached the Windsor family estate, two hours had passed.
The Windsor family was not as steeped in tradition as the Hastings family, but when the former patriarch passed away, the tradition of adorning the house in white was still carried out.
The last time Natalie had visited the Windsor family home was over a year ago. As she stepped inside, she was immediately struck by an overpowering sense of decay and desolation, instinctively tightening her grip on Oliver's hand.
She looked at Oliver and found that he was staring indifferently at the white flowers on the entrance door. His gaze was deep and inscrutable, revealing none of his thoughts.
