Chapter 1136 Show Some Promise, Mrs. Windsor
Oliver leaned in for a kiss.
Natalie quickly covered her lips with one hand and pushed against Oliver's chest with the other. "Hey! Nathan is here!"
Turning her head, she saw Nathan sitting on the white carpet, looking up at Oliver and Natalie with big, curious eyes.
Natalie gave Oliver a hard slap on the shoulder. "Let go of me; I need to go out!"
"Baby, is this how you ask for a favor?" Oliver didn't budge.
Nathan was too young to understand anything, and even if he did, he wouldn't remember. By the time he grew up, he wouldn't recall anything from when he was one year old.
Natalie cursed Oliver in her heart but softened her tone outwardly. "Honey, please let me go. I'll be back to keep you company, okay?"
Even though Nathan was already one, hearing "honey" from Natalie's mouth still made Oliver's heart tremble, and he was willing to give her anything.
"Fine." Oliver reluctantly let go of Natalie. "But how you keep me company, that's up to me."
"Pervert!" Natalie's cheeks flushed.
This elicited a chuckle from Oliver.
Oliver's fingers traced the outline of Natalie's reddened earlobe as he laughed. "Nathan is watching, show some dignity, Mrs. Windsor."
The nightlife was always synonymous with bars.
Natalie had arranged to meet Flora, and the two found Jane in a VIP booth on the second floor. Several empty beer bottles were already on the table in front of Jane.
Tasting wine was a must for socialites, and Jane knew wines well. But when she was in a bad mood, she preferred beer.
She was also downing a glass of whiskey, apparently thinking beer wasn't strong enough.
"Jane, mixing drinks will give you a headache!" Flora snatched the whiskey glass from Jane's hand.
But Jane was quicker, downing the whiskey in one gulp and giving Flora and Natalie a triumphant smile.
"Flora, the headache isn't from mixing drinks; it's from bad alcohol!" Jane, still clear-headed despite her drinking, corrected Flora and waved her hand. "Come Sit here! Have a few drinks with me!"
Flora and Natalie exchanged a glance. Before they could say anything, Jane had already taken back the glasses they had just picked up.
"Sorry, my bad. I forgot you both have kids. How can moms drink?" Jane muttered to herself.
Natalie and Flora had always thought kids were taboo for Jane. Now that she had brought it up herself, both felt a pang of unease.
Jane, ever perceptive, guessed what they were thinking and smiled. "It's okay. If I don't mind, why should you? That child probably knew he wouldn't be happy in this world, so he pushed me to make that decision. I don't regret it, feel a bit of sorrow."
"Jane." Natalie gently patted Jane's back.
Jane suddenly looked up, her eyes filled with sadness as she sought an answer from Natalie and Flora. "Natalie, Flora, do you think the child felt pain when he left this world? They say a five or six-month-old fetus has nerve cells and can feel pain, right?"
"He wouldn't," Flora said.
"But you're in pain, Jane," Natalie added.
"I'm actually okay. At the time, I didn't feel anything, probably because the pain had numbed me. I passed out, but I knew that with the way I landed on my stomach, the child must have turned into a mess inside me. I..."
Jane lowered her head, feeling a dull ache in her chest, like a knife twisting inside her.
As a mother, she was afraid of pain. The child must have been fearful of pain too, right?
"Drink." Natalie, at a loss, offered Jane a glass of whiskey. "Let it out, and everything will be fine. Once the alcohol wears off, you'll forget all this."
"Jane, you can't force everything. Let go of what you need to let go," Flora said, pouring herself and Natalie a drink.
"You two are drinking too? Your kids won't blame me, will they?" Jane said.
"He wouldn't dare!"
"She wouldn't dare!"
Natalie and Flora said in unison.
The three of them shared a smile.
"Cheers!"
"Cheers."
Natalie and Flora were fine, both having a decent tolerance for alcohol. They drank with Jane, not too fast or too much, and an hour later, they were still quite sober.
Jane's eyes began to glaze over as she watched a performer on stage. Suddenly, she said, "It's over."
"What's over?" Natalie asked.
Natalie and Flora felt this was the real reason for tonight's drinking session.
Jane gave a bitter smile, and two unexpected tears rolled down her cheeks. "My youthful love is completely over."
Realizing she was crying, Jane angrily wiped her tears, scolding herself as she did. "What's there to cry about? Jane, what's there to cry about? It should have ended long ago, so why cry now? But Natalie, Flora, I feel so awful, like something is being cut out of my heart. I don't want to feel this way, but I can't go on anymore."
Natalie and Flora exchanged a glance, both hesitant to speak.
Jane took a gulp of red wine, no longer trying to stop her tears, and said in a self-destructive tone, "Anthony came to see me today. I told him it was completely over. It should have ended long ago. Natalie, Flora, I'm so tired."
So it was because of Anthony.
The experiences between Anthony and Jane made it difficult for them to continue together.
There was too deep a chasm between them, filled with the grudges of the previous generation, their youthful mistakes, the schemes they were involved in, and the life of a child who would never return.
Flora hugged Jane's shoulder, her voice gentle yet firm. "If you're tired, take a break. If you don't want it, let it go. Jane, we'll always be here for you. Everything will pass. Look at me; I'm doing fine now, aren't I?"
Having faced death, gone through pregnancy and childbirth alone, had her work plagiarized, fought in her beloved field, raised her daughter by herself, and later returned to face her mother's death and her father's mental illness, Flora's journey was like a rebirth from the ashes.
Few knew the past of this glamorous, well-known designer, Flora.
Those who did found it hard to believe how such a slender, fragile figure could bear so much.
But Flora did.
Natalie said, "There's nothing you can't get through, Jane. Letting go is just a phase in life. You're so wonderful; you'll definitely have a better life ahead."
She continued, "If you want to cry, just cry. Flora and I won't remember anything from tonight. Our Jane will always be the most beautiful and coolest girl."
