Chapter 963: Jane, I'm Warning You
"Aurora, your attitude towards Jane is too nice. I know you're a good person, but for someone like Jane, it's totally unnecessary!" someone else chimed in.
Aurora withdrew her gaze from the direction Jane had left and smiled helplessly.
Aurora didn't want to slander against Jane with others because Anthony once pursued Jane, she couldn't bring herself to speak ill of Jane no matter how much Aurora disliked her, except the lingering ties between Jane and Anthony were cut off.
But Aurora couldn't tell those things to them.
If she did, everyone in this circle would know that not only did Anthony not dislike Jane, but he also couldn't forget her. It would make Aurora look like the one who was breaking up others’ family.
Aurora felt that she was the rightful woman for Anthony and she didn't need anyone's sympathy or pity.
Aurora's silence made others think she was just good-natured, which only fueled their indignation on her behalf. Someone commented Jane was shameless and bad-tempered. The other teased the sharp difference between Jane used to be and how she was now.
Suddenly, a woman named Carol Cunningham stood up and walked towards the garden exit.
"Ms. Cunningham?" Aurora called out to Carol, "Are you going for a walk? I can arrange for someone to show you around."
"No," Carol replied coldly. "I'm leaving. You all have fun."
"Carol, why are you leaving early? We just got started!"
"Yeah, Ms. Cunningham!" Several people stood up to persuade her to stay.
Carol was the daughter of the newly wealthy Cunningham family. Although the Cunningham family started late, their main business was in high-tech enterprises with core technologies and industrial support. Now, the Cunningham family was a sought-after partner.
These rich kids born with silver spoons were usually arrogant and frivolous, but they knew it was important to maintain good relations with Carol for their families.
"So what?" Carol was a bit impatient. She had intended to leave gracefully, but some people just wouldn't let it go. "We just got started with mocking and denouncing Jane? Even without the Watkins family, there will never the top socialite after Jane, which shows how strong she is personally. No matter how many times you denounce her here, it won't change the fact that she's outstanding."
"Carol, are you defending Jane?" Everyone was shocked.
"Carol, Jane might still want to ruin the relationship between Aurora and Mr. Clark. Are you sure you want to defend a woman like that?" Shirley said.
Carol rolled her eyes, "Please, get real. The line of men wanting to marry Jane stretches from here to overseas. Does Anthony have something special that makes him so popular?"
Carol even mocked Anthony.
If Jane were present, she would applaud enthusiastically.
"Ms. Cunningham, did you know Ms. Watkins before?" Aurora suppressed her displeasure and forced a smile as she asked.
"I knew her," Carol smirked. Being a mixed-race beauty, she was particularly enchanting when smiling. "When I was studying abroad, many people knew Jane and considered her the best in her role as a socialite."
Carol paused for a moment and then said, "If I had known that today it was just about hearing you mock Jane, I would have stayed home and reviewed some IPO cases."
It was a merciless slap in the face for them.
Carol was implying that this group of people was both short-sighted and boring!
As Carol left, three more people stood up, gave Aurora a brief nod, and prepared to leave.
These three came from top-tier families in Allentown. If it weren't for the Clark family's influence, Aurora wouldn't have been able to invite them at all.
Although they didn't say much, their actions made it clear that they agreed with Carol.
This showed that they leaned more towards Jane.
Aurora turned grim and tightly pressed against her pregnant belly as if seeking some comfort from it.
Aurora couldn't understand that Jane no longer had her former glory as a high-society socialite, why were there still people speaking up for Jane in this circle that valued family background the most?
After all, this was the Clark family. Even if Jane had nothing to do, it wouldn't be appropriate for her to just hang around in her guest room, lest she give Ann any reason to gossip.
Ann had many social engagements these days and was out again today.
Jane was in the living room, working on a private project on her laptop. The client was a B-list celebrity who had sought Jane out after seeing the photos Jane took for Natalie, offering a generous fee.
"Jane." A male voice suddenly came from above her.
Jane felt a wave of nausea even before she saw the person. When she looked up, she saw Joe's face, which instantly ruined her mood.
Jane didn't even bother to greet him. She just looked at him coldly to see what he had to say.
"Jane, what's with that expression? You're no longer Ms. Watkins of the Watkins family. I'm the heir apparent of the Green family. Why are you acting all high and mighty with me?" Joe asked.
Jane lowered her head and continued working on her document.
Joe glanced at Jane's laptop screen, which was filled with text that looked like some kind of contract. He couldn't make heads or tails of it.
"Jane, I won't hold your past actions against you. I'll give you another chance. If you're willing to be with me, I'll take care of you. You won't have to do these tiring and low-paying jobs anymore," Joe said, as if he was doing her a favor.
Jane glanced at her project proposal worth at least one hundred thousand dollars, then looked at Joe. She couldn't stand the polluted air around him any longer. She picked up her laptop and stood up, intending to leave and not waste any more time with him.
"Jane, I'm talking to you!" Joe swiped at her laptop and sent it crashing to the ground, shattering it into pieces.
Jane turned icy.
A moment ago, Joe had been acting all high and mighty, but now he was instantly scared, remembering the time three years ago when Jane had beaten him to tears.
"How dare you keep your eyes on the laptop and ignore me!" Joe said self-righteously, "I have plenty of money to buy you a new one."
"A laptop can be bought, but money doesn’t heal your stupid brain," Jane said as she walked towards Joe, her eyes dark and menacing, as if she was about to use him as a punching bag.
"Jane, if you dare touch me, without your brother to protect you, my family will destroy you!" Joe tried to steady his nerve and thought he had a great point.
"Jane, if you dare touch me, I'll make you beg for my forgiveness! The fact that I want you to be my mistress is a compliment to you, you...!"
Joe's words were cut off by a scream.
Jane punched him straight in the stomach.
Before anyone could react, she followed up with several more punches and kicks, moving so quickly that the six-foot-tall Joe had no chance to fight back.
