Chapter 752 What Are You Afraid of?
If something were to happen to the two of them, she would be unable to help at all. As for idle gossip, she had no interest in it at all; after all, Lucas and Lilian were not related by blood.
"Natalie, don't be angry. Lucas was forced to be with me initially," Lilian said, quickly defending her boyfriend, "In fact, it was I who forced him when I was drunk. I wanted him to take responsibility for me, so he ended up being with me."
Before Lilian could finish, Lucas received an angry glare from his sister. He really wanted to tell his naive girlfriend to be quiet at this moment.
Natalie looked at Lucas. Her expression seemed to say, 'You deceived her and made her feel guilty for you?'
Lucas licked his lips nervously, his eyes darting about, afraid to meet his intelligent elder sister's gaze.
Natalie took a deep breath, feeling her anger boil up. She asked, "So, you two have...slept together?"
This question was direct, and Lilian’s reply was also very direct.
"Yes."
"Did you take precautions?"
Lucas nodded frantically, eager to save himself.
Natalie rubbed her forehead, telling herself, 'It's okay, my younger brother and his girlfriend have grown up, and they took precautions. It’s okay, but I’m... still so angry!'
Natalie noticed that both of them were somewhat uneasy; the duo was unlike the Lucas and Lilian she had known before. It was probably because they were shocked by her discovery.
Under these circumstances, there was no point in blaming them.
"You'd better think this over and sort out your thoughts. I'll talk to you again tomorrow," Natalie said, "Is there anything else you want to say?"
Lilian shook her head vigorously. Ever since she saw Natalie, her mind had been blank, with only one thought: her new boyfriend might be in big trouble.
"I do," Lucas interjected, "Oliver knows about this as well. He has known for a long time."
This was Lucas’ attempt to divert Natalie’s attention. As he had expected, he saw Natalie's expression change immediately.
"Both of you can talk. I don’t object to you dating, and I don't have the right to object. However, until you give me an explanation, Lilian must sleep in her own room, understand?" Natalie said before standing up, planning to go upstairs to look for Oliver.
The implication behind 'sleep in her own room' was clear to everyone.
Lucas awkwardly touched his nose, reluctant to meet the gaze of his sister who had raised him since he was young.
Lilian blinked and nodded, thinking to herself that even if she did not return to her room, Natalie would not know.
Natalie added, "I'll ask Casey."
Lilian responded weakly, "Oh."
Her hidden thoughts were very obvious.
After Natalie left Lucas’ room, Lilian glanced at him and asked, "Is it okay to betray Oliver like this?"
'What’s wrong with it?'
Lucas did not respond directly. Instead, he asked, "Between my sister scolding me and my sister scolding Oliver, which one do you choose?"
Lilian did not hesitate and replied decisively, "Of course, I'd prefer her to scold Oliver. It's good as long as I don't have to choose between you and Natalie."
…
Oliver was completely unaware that he had been betrayed by his treacherous team member. However, he noticed the icy expression on Natalie's face when she entered the room. He set aside the files in his hand and approached her, asking, "What's wrong? Did someone upset you?"
'Did those people downstairs irritate her?'
However, after a moment's observation, Oliver realized that was not the case. Clearly, his beloved was angry with him.
"Oliver, Lilian's boyfriend is Lucas, right?"
Although phrased as a question, Natalie's tone was assertive.
Oliver paused briefly, realizing there might have been an oversight earlier that day when the couple returned to the hotel and failed to keep it a secret.
'Both of them are so careless!'
"Yes." Oliver nodded.
"Not only did they keep it from me, but you kept it from me as well," Natalie said, growing angrier. She shook off Oliver's hand and glared at him.
Oliver quickly found a way out for himself, saying, "Your brother asked me to keep it a secret."
Natalie raised an eyebrow. "Hmm?"
'What is wrong with these two? Are they blaming each other?'
Oliver continued, "Your brother mentioned that if I didn't keep the secret, he'd become an obstacle in our relationship."
"Get out of my way! I don't want to see you right now!"
Natalie pushed Oliver aside.
'These three people were truly infuriating!'
Natalie did not exert much force, Oliver, anticipating her movements, stepped back to prevent her from hurting herself in her frustration.
"Do you object to their relationship?" Oliver asked, leaning against the wall and maintaining a two-step distance from Natalie.
"Do I have the right to interfere in their free love?" Natalie retorted irritably.
"You do," Oliver responded. "If you say 'no', the two of them will definitely break up, especially Lilian."
Natalie considered this carefully and realized that indeed, Lilian tended to heed her more than Lucas.
"Oliver, don't you think they..." Natalie organized her thoughts before she said, "I'm not against them being together, but have you considered that Lilian is already engaged?"
"I have said before, the engagement can be resolved," Oliver replied nonchalantly.
If Mr. Morris genuinely cared for Lilian, it would be a different matter. However, his interest was not in Lilian, but in the power of the Norton family. Mr. Morris might not fully support Lilian in the family disputes. Such an engagement, seen as merely an exchange of interests, would eventually be dissolved.
Oliver would not agree to the engagement, and neither would Lilian’s parents. The reason it had not yet been dissolved was simply due to a lack of opportunity.
In Oliver's view, Lucas represented a suitable opportunity to end this engagement and relieve some of their troubles.
Initially, Natalie believed that Lucas interfering in someone else’s engagement was highly unethical. However, after listening to Oliver's explanation and recalling what he said about the Morris family, it became clear that they were not good people.
"Well, let's not discuss the engagement for now," Natalie said, "But considering Lucas's illness hasn't been cured yet... what if... are you confident enough to entrust Lilian to Lucas?"
Natalie hesitated and could not finish explaining the 'what if'.
What if Lucas’s leukemia relapsed? What would happen to Lilian then?
If it were any other girl, she might not have been so concerned. After all, she treated Lilian like her own sister.
"They're not afraid of the 'what if', so what are you afraid of?" Oliver asked.
Noticing that Natalie seemed to have calmed down, he walked over and hugged her before he continued, "Natalie, everyone must be responsible for their decisions. I know you care about them, but you can't protect them forever."
Each person had to bear the consequences of their actions, regardless of what those might be.
Oliver did not mention that he had already found a suitable bone marrow donor. However, the donor was proving problematic.
